The Coxswains Journey

The Coxswains Journey The coxswains journey is a podcast/ blog designed for all things coxing, rowing and sport in general.

Meet Guy, a sports enthusiast who discovered his passion for sport at the age of 13. It all began with a memorable “fun run” covering 9 kilometers, followed shortly by a somewhat challenging completion of the Melbourne Marathon. Despite his initial lack of natural sporting ability as a youngster, these experiences sparked a fire within him and fueled his motivation to excel. During his early years, Guy ventured into rowing at school in Melbourne, Australia. This opened the door to a world of diverse sports and activities, including cross-country running, snow skiing, and even a less successful attempt at the coordination-intensive sport of AFL football. However, it was the triathlon that ultimately captured Guy’s heart and became his primary focus. Through his involvement in this demanding sport, he developed a deep fascination with training methodologies and the psychology behind athletic performance. The similarities between triathlon and rowing provided him with a unique synergy, as his passion for both disciplines complemented each other perfectly. As Guy transitioned from rowing to the role of Coxswain, he recognized that pursuing excellence in both rowing and triathlon simultaneously presented challenges. Undeterred, he fully embraced his new role as a Coxswain and embraced coaching with unwavering enthusiasm. Guy’s dedication and commitment have not gone unnoticed, resulting in a series of notable achievements:

Multiple Long Course Triathlon finisher
2006: Quoll 24hr Adventure Race
2009: ITU Corporate Triathlon Teams World Champion
2016-2022: Age Group Winner in the 2XU Triathlon Series

Join Guy on his exhilarating journey as he continues to push his limits, inspire others, and strive for greatness in the world of sports.

I love the Golden Oars posts! They capture reality! And this one really grabs me! It’s so on point! And it’s so true for any competitive crew. But it’s not about being “cut” it’s about making sure there is a process that leads to that outcome.

Best of luck to all at the World Masters Rowing Regatta.

Discipline or Motivation? They are both very different, and it’s a conversation worth having with yourself to help know your “why”.
Just over 2 weeks before the triathlon world championships I am finding motivation is slowly creeping back! It has been absent for months! Discipline has been the only driver!
Well now the line is in sight, my mojo is returning, thanks god!

The books tell part of the story. Your boathouse holds the rest.

*The Boys in the Boat* tells the Washington story.
*Mind Over Water* tells the Charles River story.
*The Kiwi Pair* tells the New Zealand story.

Three extraordinary books.
Three specific windows into what rowing is.

But every boathouse in every country
has a version of these stories
that has never been written down.

The coach who changed everything.
The season nobody outside the club remembers.
The race that still gets told
twenty years later at the same table
with the same people making it
slightly more dramatic each time.

This page is 12,000 rowers from around the world.

That is twelve thousand untold stories.

What is the one your club tells that nobody outside it knows?
Drop it below. We are listening. 👇
