Continuing with our new daily series: Behind the Whistle!
Each day, we’ll shine a spotlight on a referee or touch judge who has helped shape, serve and contribute to the great game of rugby league.
Today we feature our 8th special profile on those who contributed to refereeing but didn’t quite make first grade.

Today we recognise Damian Briscoe.Damian began his refereeing journey with the Western Suburbs District Association before moving to Group 6, where he became the first official in the association’s history to be issued a graded number.

Graded #962 in 2013, Damian went on to enjoy a successful NSW Grade career across seven seasons from 2013 to 2019. During that time, he built an outstanding record with 219 total NSW Grade appointments, including 126 NSW Cup appointments as both referee and touch judge.

As a referee, Damian controlled 108 graded matches, all as either the single referee or head referee, and earned four finals series appointments.

One of the great highlights of his career was being appointed to a record four Sydney Shield Grand Finals in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019 — an outstanding achievement and a reflection of the trust placed in him for major matches. Damian was also appointed to the 2016 Australia v England Schoolboys Test Match at Shark Park, another significant representative appointment in his career.

Damian Briscoe’s career shows that impact in officiating is not only measured by first grade appearances. Through consistency, resilience and dedication, he made a lasting contribution across NSW competitions and helped set a pathway for officials from Group 6.

A Western Suburbs and Group 6 official, Western Subrubs official, graded referee, NSW Cup official and record Sydney Shield Grand Final referee — Damian Briscoe helped keep the game moving.

A huge congratulations to two of our members, Matty Galvin and Callum Rigby, who have just finished up at the ASSRL Schoolboy/Schoolgirl Nationals Tournament in Coffs Harbour over the past week. Both Matt and Callum represented not only themselves, NSWRL and their association extremely well, and we couldn’t be prouder of them. Good stuff gents!

A huge congratulations to two outstanding referees on their prestigious Grand Final appointments!

Matthew Galvin from the Group 6 Rugby League Referees will take charge of the Under 18's Australian Schoolboys Grand Final between New South Wales Combined High Schools and New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges.

Congratulations also to Bailey Clark from the Parramatta Referees, who has earned the achievement of refereeing the Under 16 Boys Grand Final for the second consecutive year!

Two fantastic appointments and a wonderful recognition of their hard work, dedication, and performances throughout the championships. Best of luck to Matthew and Bailey!

Congratulations to Callum Rigby, who has been appointed to referee the Laurie Daley Cup Grand Final this weekend at Port Macquarie.

Callum began the rep reason as centre referee in Laurie Daley Cup and progressed well, debuting soon after in Harold Matts and performing consistently well. This weekend’s appointment is a testament to the hard work Callum has put in on and off the field and we wish him all the best for the game ahead.

Last Sunday all Macarthur Referees attended our inaugural season launch to kick off the 2026 season with purpose and determination.

With one of the biggest collaborations between and yet, members were brought up to speed with on and off field processes, reporting and coaching standards as well as new appointment and availability technology.

We hosted guests Jason O’Brien (NSWRLRA) and John Burns (NSWRL Area Manager), who attended to assist with a wider game focus as well as introducing the new Premiership Competition appointments process.

All members are looking forward to a positive and successful season.

National Schoolboy/Schoolgirl Finals!!
A massive congratulations to two of our members, who represented our association in some of the most prestigious junior representative appointments yesterday at Leichhardt Oval.
Both Matthew Galvin (Schoolboys) and Aden Hayward (Schoolgirls) were appointed as Touch Judges in the National finals, after a successful State Schoolboy/girl campaign this year.
We are all very proud of Matt and Aden for their massive achievements, well done boys!

On Monday night we hosted a joint training seminar with Western Suburbs Referees Association (including Pizza!) to improve our knowledge on report writing and a refresher on policies.

We would like to thank Steve Clapson from NSWRL Referees Association for taking the time to share his wealth of knowledge with us.

Training seminars are a important part of the continued development of match officials through out their journeys.
