One thing that we can all count on, is that things will change. This past weekend saw the closure of my beautiful studio in Hampton. As circumstances had it, my building was sold, we were unable to stay, and after much thought I decided it was not the right time for me to relocate a studio of this size and instead decided to continue from a home studio.

I would like to thank all the wonderful people that have passed through the Studio, those that have been there from the early days and those that stayed only for a little while. I am glad that authentic Pilates has brought such benefits to your lives or that you have just given it a go. We have enjoyed teaching each and every single one of you and sharing all the authentic Pilates can bring to your lives.

A huge thank you to all the wonderful teachers that have worked in the studio over the years, especially Rachel Lotspeich and Lucia Farina who stuck it out with me during the Covid years. I would not have been able to run the Studio without your expertise, dedication and passion for authentic Pilates.

Thankfully, when there are endings, there are always new beginnings, and I am excited to be starting afresh in my home studio teaching my dedicated authentic Pilates enthusiasts.

x Michaela

THE ROLL OVER

It's a big stretch for the back and requires a deep abdominal pull to lead the lowering portion of the exercise. We can work the length on the spine the entire way and while reaching the legs we can lighten the load on the descent.

It's not suitable for everyone but for those who enjoy it, it's quite an achievement when it happens really smoothly.

Like all the pilates exercises, whatever version you do and to whatever range of movement your body allows there is still tonnes of benefit.

It's about handling challenging exercises in a delicate way. Coming in and out of the exercises with control means something and is actually much safer than collapsing at the end of them!

Finesse in a way, can also look like strength. For sure, it can make you appear stronger than you are. Cutting corners won't build strength but sprinkling some finesse into your workout will absolutely bring results and also keep a nice steady energy through out the session.

Another way to bring some finesse into the session can be when you keep the breathing smooth. We tend to panic breathe, or hold our breath when something is difficult but keeping calm but strong breathing we also teach our bodies control, through that finesse!

THE MAT

The mat does not involve any springs but it's a huge part of our system and almost the boss of it all! Through the mat work, the principles of resistance and fluidity that you'd get from the springs, are still important.

By engaging the muscles and imagining the movements as if you WERE using springs or resistance, the body becomes more connected and in control of the movements. This encourages a smoother, more fluid workout, where the body is able to move through the exercises with greater ease and control.

So as much as the classical Pilates system uses springs through most of the equipment, the idea and end goal is to be able to almost float through the mat work with as much muscle awareness that the springs gifted you with!

Is Pilates good for long term health?

Like all exercise yes it is!! Pilates has a strong focus on the power house muscles (abdominal muscles, lower back, hips and buttocks) and promotes balance in muscular strength on both sides of your body.

When we look at how Pilates supports our skeletal structure it's very important to keep it up as we get older to keep us stable and confident with day to day activities. Exercise has so many obvious benefits but some really vital ones are

Improved brain function
Protect against chronic disease
Improved quality of sleep
Reduce feelings of anxiety and depression

Along with all the good stuff for your metabolic system!

Whatever you do, keep exercising :)

ME-NO-PAUSE

A new client at the space the other day said "wow I love it here I can openly talk about menopause and it's not taboo", of course, I literally laughed because it's just an every day topic around here.

It got me wondering though, why anyone would think it to be a taboo subject?

Menopause is a natural biological process that marks the end of reproductive years in a woman's life. That's literally it. Why would that be taboo?

Our Small Group Classes are just that, a small group of only 4 people in one class. In order to ensure that you are getting the best instruction, that you are practicing safely and that you are doing in the exercise in the right way for your body this is about as many as a teacher can see at once. Anymore than that and you will get lost in a crowd. In our small groups of 4 we can still focus on individual goals and achieve progression of the exercises and results in the body.

This quote from Joseph Pilates is all about slouching and how bad it is for the body. He believed his method could help reduce slouching in the body by strengthening what he called the "powerhouse" muscles - abdominals, glutes, and inside thighs.

Having these muscles strong and working for you in your body enables you to naturally hold your body in a way that creates space through your internal organs, enables you to breathe correctly and prevents a rounded upper back.

You will feel that it is easy to to move through the many and varied positions that are required of the body in an easier way.

A strong powerhouse leaves you feeling that you are being held up through your torso, with arms, neck and shoulders relaxed and legs that can swing freely from the hips.

Regular practice of the classical Pilates method, using the full range of apparatus, which we have at Trinity Pilates, can assist in improving or maintaining good posture. Come and give it a try!

Pilates for Posture.

When it comes down to it, Pilates is good for posture if the person teaching you knows how to apply an exercise and suggest appropriate cues for your postural in-balance, or area of need. The instructor's ability to see your body and understand its needs is essential if the aim of you practicing Pilates is for improved posture....

CHEST EXPANSION

Let's talk about the difference between open hand grip and closed grip on the bar during Chest Expansion. In the open hand grip, your fingers are pointing down, and the bar is placed in the palm of the hand closer the base of the palm. In the closed grip, your fingers wrap around the bar, knuckles pointing down. Both are with the wrists straight, in line with the arm and hand. Both grips have their unique advantages and can be used based on your individual needs and preferences....

*THE FOOT CORRECTOR*

Really, it's a foot exerciser. Balance is so important and needs to be consciously worked on as we travel along through life. It all really starts with the alignment of our feet. Balance is good for the nervous system but also beneficial to our feet as well. If you think your balance isn't great, it might be that you ned to start exercising your feet!

By using the foot corrector regularly, you can improve your foot arches, correct over pronation or supination, and realign your feet to support your balance work but also your posture too, as feet speak to our hips too!

It's a really versatile and inclusive piece of kit, any fitness level or flexibility can use this gadget. There's really no reason you'd not see progress once you start using the foot corrector. Little and often does the job. Again, consistency is key.

We have a few of them at the studio, Joseph was big on foot work and so are we :)
