Would you like to become a movie star? All you have to do is join the Hamilton Bowling Club which is about to feature in an advertisement for recycling in a plan to get more sporting clubs to take part in the scheme. Members will be ready to sign autographs shortly.

All painting of the clubhouse is now finished and the old girl looks pretty good in her new livery – thanks to all concerned.

There was little bowls played this week with Thursday’s social bowls washed out and only a small number braving the conditions on Saturday. Merv Anton continued his improvement by winning the day teamed with the wily old veteran Syd Barnes. The duo won all their games with 13 shots to spare.

There is a big weekend of bowling coming up on Saturday with the club’s first winter Bonanza Day. Entries close on Thursday with play commencing at 10.00 A.M. Visitors especially welcome.

Following the Annual Meeting of the Board last week Gerard Lucas was elected is the new chairman with Robyn Donovan as his deputy. Neville Linke and Hamish McDonald continue in their roles as secretary and treasurer with Russell Sherren the new member of the Board. John Forsyth takes over as men’s coordinator and Heather McIntyre as women’s. John Forsyth was presented with a special shield as reward for being named as best club person.

There was plenty of social bowls last week. On Thursday John Crane and Rob Henstridge won the pairs competition and Neville Linke, Elma Atbury in her big freeze hat and Trevor Schultz the triples winners – the only team to win all their games. On Saturday only 18 players took part and played three games of triples. Again it was Neville Linke who is unstoppable at the moment who lead Richard Neaves and visitor Kevin Manson to victory.

After four rounds of indoor bowls Hamilton is yet to record a win, going down by 11 shots to Branxholme with Peter Clapham’s team winning well. Good luck this week against Grangeburn Blue.

Don’t forget there is skills and drills training each Friday at 10.30 A.M. conducted by coach Russell Sherren – all welcome; and get your names down quickly for the first Bonanza Day on June 13th. Single entry only.

It was a great day of bowling on Sunday as the finals of the major minor pairs was played out. In the morning Russell Sherren and Rob Woodhouse opened up a huge lead against Thelma Amakuti and Norm Pech only to have their lead vanish with a six shot turnaround to force a sudden death play off after finishing level which Pech and Amakuti won. The final before a large audience opened disastrously for the Pech / Amakuti combo with Heather McIntyre and Richartd Neaves opening up a 10 shot lead with magnificent draw bowling. Althjough there was a fightback McIntyre and Neaves were never headed and ran our victors. Congratulations to all players.

In superb weather thirty six bowlers took part in social bowls on Thursday in a mixture of pairs and triples, enhanced with some great visitors. Neville Linke who is in great form teamed with Peter McIntyre from Dunkeld to win the pairs while Robyn Donovan, Julie Po***ck from Grangeburn and Noel Murphy played great bowls to win the triples.

On Saturday a smaller number of players braved the threatening weather to play three games of pairs. Richard Neaves in his first game as a skipper joined Tom Storer to win the day from Norm Pech and John Mitchell. Indoor bowlers receive only a small mention this week, losing their second pennant match by four shots. Coach Bev is threatening reprisals. There is a bye this week.

The club’s three pennant shields and photos are now on display thanks to Richard Neaves’ handiwork, Thanks Richard, my choice as bowler of the week, All players are requested to begin training for the first Bonanza Day in June, beginning with a 6.00 A.M sprint around Lake Hamilton.

See you all at the Annual Meeting and the election of new committees.
