I’m still truckin over here! And boy do I have an adventure to share 😃 last week I headed down to the Grampians for the GPT 100mi Stage Race.

162km, 8000m ⬆️⬇️, 4 adventurous days, a billion rocks, and a handful of beautiful new friends!

I was worried massively about my angry foot but thankfully Physio Megz worked her magic and it was perfect the whole adventure. Maybe a little by luck but also by a diligent daily routine. I knew this would be hard and I didn’t know if it was even possible, but all I had to do was show up each day and put one foot in front of the other.

Day 1 was 0/10 stars, it felt frustrating and took forever and was the most challenging for my foot / ankle due to the coral shaped and super slanty rock. I readjusted my expectations this day and it made a huge difference.

Day 2 was -1/10 stars but it was special because so many bonds formed and everyone helped each other make it to the end. The last 15km took like 6h and 1km took me 54 minutes which was basically scrambling across the top of a ridge, described in the map as ‘Technical Ridgeline along Seven Dials’. I got to see the first two milers come through the CP not long after I’d finished.

Day 3 was feels like minus temps with 50km winds blowing people over! As I was crawling along the rocks on top of Mt William thinking “Is this legit the way 😵‍💫” I caught up to Amy, Kate, Sharon and Terry (thank god) and I stuck to them like glue from there. The terrain was so challenging and we were basically little mountain goats, then towards the end there were beautiful grassy fields. Also special thanks to Jono and Darren (Kate & Sharon’s partners) who became our group cheer squad / crew / all round supporters and life savers.

Day 4 was the finale and I think we were all in disbelief and also a bit sad. We gave ourself the name ‘Team Perserverance’ and we climbed up over Signal Peak, Mt Abrupt and Mt Sturgeon and shuffle ran our way into Dunkeld. We saw a few hikers on day 4 and when they realised we were ‘in that race’ they gave us so much encouragement. Terry who had already tried twice to complete this, was the final finisher for the day 👏 and boy did he give it every-single-thing he had. After a moment we declared “let’s do another of these together”. I’m really in awe of those around me who gave it their all, what we all achieved, and everyone’s generosity and kindness shared among strangers.

Grampians region is absolutely beautiful. Over the summer massive bushfires ripped through the whole region and the end of the race would signal the re-opening of the entire Grampians Peak Trail. Looking out at the views as we stood on top of many mountains was so cool. Trying to figure out where we came from and “are we going up there” before suddenly being already up there. The rock formations were crazy, sure they made running impossible, but it’s just so unbelievable to see and traverse.

Despite my ratings, I would 20/10 recommend the GPT Stage Race to anyone and everyone! I would go back, but I wouldn’t redo the Stage Race because I don’t think this uniquely incredible experience could be replicated 💚

I’m still over here 👋

I spent the summer pounding the pavement in preparation for Osaka Marathon. Luckily, I also got to visit my family and meet my brand new baby niece while there 🩷

We have had a very wet and interrupted summer softball season, which included a jaunt at Pan Pacific Masters Games where Woody and I squeezed in some 17 (?) games of softball and the full Distance Running schedule in 10 days! SO. MUCH. FUN! I also did the first half of the SEQ Trail Running Series short courses for a bit of trail zoomies 🌿. And finally, I did my 150th parkrun on the weekend just gone 😃.

Anyway, here’s some fun facts from my experience running the Osaka Marathon on a snowy winters day ☃️ with 34,000 likeminded lunatics:
* return of the confused sweeney 🧐
* がんばれ 🥁
* drink stations spanned over at least 100m to cater for all the people 🧃
* hardly a single paper cup to be seen thrown on the ground 🚮
* COKE! at the drink stations 😆
* at 32km was the famous Maido Aid station, a full blown smorgasbord of warm Japanese delights 🍣
* marshals with signs showing toilet stops which included how long to the next toilet stop 🚽
* perfectly flat camber-less roads, prime for the payment pounding lovers 🛣️
* 43km of streets line with people cheering and offering snacks and medical supplies lol 🚑
* a looong course so you can tell everyone it was actually Osaka Ultra-Marathon 😎

A quick short (not) story of my Blackall adventure! I had no crew, no plan, no goal, and one drop bag with a juice box 🧃

- Borks and pats from Scottie Puppen on departure from QCCC
- High-five from Brownie and chats with Cush Cush at CP1
- Hugs from grim reaper Neil at 20km and regular Neil at 42km
- Simmo jumping in to help at CP2 and beeps along the road from Sammy not long after
- Sweeney WS x 2 passes, both with big vibes!
- Beautiful Scout with water and ice and a big smile at CP3
- Friendly faces of Krystal who I went to uni with, SOK Steve letting me have the cola lolly pop, and Ross and Cherie on the way to and at the Halfway Oasis
- Onset of feeling ‘yuck’ from about 55km remaining in situ until 100km
- Megan declining to run me over with her car at about 57km on Delicia Rd and then calling me over the finish line a lifetime later
- Catching up to Mel and giving a bit of encouragement to each other
- Woody showing up at CP4 and BTR Jodie helping me too
- GUS AND LEANNE HUGS! at the TRAQ WS with a baby bandy snake
- The CP5 restaurant literally waited on me hand and foot, and found Nicola there who also made sure I was okay
- Unknowingly becoming friends with Nicola’s runner Andrew as we complained for 5km uphill to CP6
- The Dream Team showing up at CP6 having fulfilled my random requests, accepting my jokes, and sending me off with a trot and a ‘run faster’ so I didn’t have to change my headlight battery
- Running the 100th km in 6:35 and the crew nearly missing me finish after waiting 19.5h in the INFERNO 😂🏁

What a bloody day! It threw everything at everyone but with some smart choices, some complaining, some superhero volunteers, and 100km of just putting one foot in front of the other - we did it! At just shy of 5-months post op I was certainly a bit nervous, but my body and mind showed me that I can do hard things 💪

I was ready for a solo adventure in the bush but by golly the village was ready and it grew at every single corner, for which I am forever grateful 💚

more fun activities of late … coincided with extreme hayfever turned gnarly chest infection 😮‍💨🤧 but hey I got to see so many trail friends!

-Guzzler
I did some volunteering around the precinct, at the road, and at CP2 before hopping in to crew my sister Woody on her first 100km adventure! Our little team of 3 ran a smooth ship and Woody came in and out smiling at all stations. We watched her cross the line about 4am after a dream day before lining up for the 10km on the Sunday morning with Emily.

-Cross Country Championships
I was about 100m clear of being lapped and it took me 5km with a 4:30 final split to shake 70+yo John who had been hot on my tail all race! The other 3 x 70+ athletes were waaay ahead 😆 but I really loved the XC series and hopefully next year I will be fully fit for the whole lot! Thanks to for the great shots all season 📸

-Rainbow Beach Trails
Damn son have I been missing out! What a beautiful place to run, I will absolutely be back 🌈. Apparently the 11km is the hardest course and I will not dispute 😂, next time I might do the marathon.

-Softball QLD Masters
I got to play in my first masters comp! 6 games of softball over the weekend playing in division 6 of 17 🥎. I’m playing at Pan Pacs too later in the year and I’ve also signed up for the athletics distance running which is a mix of different running disciplines (cross country, trail, and road)!

Next up for me is Coastal High in a few weeks, it’s been on my bucketlist for so long!

Still over here doing all the run for fun things!

- I ran the Walkabout Creek 12km race for 5th female and 11th overall
- I’ve been having a run in the QA Cross Country series which is their winter competition. The Masters is a 6km course of 3 x 2km loops, short and fast and fun!
- I also did the QA Cross Country Short Course Championships in Toogoolawah which was a 4km course, came 3rd in W35-40 🥉
- UTA50 in the beautiful Blue Mountains! Epic place to run with the most stunning views and great conditions for 7:25h 🌿
- I became a Run Director at Petrie parkrun 😃

Time for some R&R now though. As some may remember, about 18-months ago I suffered a flare up of my IBD after being stable for ~7y and off all treatment for 2y. It was discovered that I had a 14cm stricture of my small bowel developed from scar tissue, which was only 0.5cm wide - a ticking time bomb 💣 for all sorts of problems including my broccoli attacks 🥦

After several discussions with my specialists and GP over the course of 1y with delicate and precise planning, last week I went in for a planned ileocolic resection with anastomosis. The procedure went very well and I was back home in a few days. Extremely grateful to have a quality medical team looking after me who understand and support my lifestyle 🙏

I’m not in any real hurry to return to running / gym / football, just taking each day as it comes to make sure my body is healed and strong again

Some big plans in the making for the back end of 2024 😎

💥 2024 goes on!
Since my last update, I celebrated a birthday and moved into a new age category!

- I ran the QMA 5000m Championship as the solo competitor of my new age group so alas, I won again 😂
- I was nominated to the TRAQ committee which I’m very excited about. TRAQ do great things and attract great people 🌿
- I did some vollies and some running at SEQ Trail Running Series. I might go back for another crack at the short course series next season 👀
- Alfie attended his first parkrun, CHAOS! But it was a joy all the same.
- I ran the 12km at Yandina Five’O’, finishing in 6th place. A very hot female race with only 90 seconds separating 2nd and 6th - love to see it!
- I also vollied at CP3 and became part of a finish line mosh pit 🏁. Yandina is really something unique, it’s so inclusive and welcoming of every single person.

My focus shifts to UTA now where I’ll luckily be lining up for the 50km again. I am beyond excited to get back to this beautiful land and hopefully (🤞) run the original course.

After UTA? Who knows, but I foresee more short and sweet trails in my future 💚

🏃‍♀️ 2024 so far has been trying new and exciting and (mostly) very fun things: first LOS, first 10km race, first track race!
- Glasshouse Standing on NYE with the focus on the very important cause of ⛰️ I realised pretty quickly that it certainly wasn’t my cup of tea, pulling the pin after 4 loops.
- Beerwah@Night 10km in 1:16:59 for 9th female (139) and 38th overall (235), had me feeling confident and most of all I had the BEST time and loved seeing so many of my favourite runners out there 🔦
- QMA 3000m Championships in 13:43, not as quick as I’d love to be running but I was the only W30 so I came first and got a gold medal 😂 it was so much fun and I will definitely be back!

I also started a new job and we welcomed young Alfie to the family so settling into a new routine is still a work in progress, but we’re figuring it out! 👩‍💻🐶

This morning we had the TRAQ X Sweeney Runners Summer Series at Bullocky Rest! A massive turnout of people from near and far which was very humbling for our little club who has only recently burst onto trail scene. A beautiful morning full of friendly happy faces mingling on the trails, inspiring to see some even give trail running a go for the first time 😃💚🌿

During the week in the lead up to this event, I was fortunate to share my story with Gus from TRAQ. A very good way to wrap up 2023 as I look ahead to new goals and adventures in 2024! Wishing y’all happy and safe holidays and I’ll see you on the flip side 👋

KOSCI 50!

What a mighty adventure this one was, totally deceiving and totally savage! It was basically a 50km uphill race on a very beautiful (and immaculate) trail running along the Thredbo River … except for the mountain part ⛰️.

The start line was full of trail royalty and also many familiar faces and regular joes ready to have a great day. Off we went for about 15km of relatively flat singetrack and then it just started going uuppppp. Forever up. Gentle at first, AND THEN at about 24km we arrived at Friday Flat and went straight up the ski field towards Eagles Nest 🫠. It was big. Every corner there was more big. At one point we got to a chairlift and I thought it was the Eagles Nest. Wrong, more up. It was a 5km train of grimness with runners sitting and lying in the grass everywhere. Carnage.

Once we got to the Eagles Nest it was supposed to be a nice 4km downhill run ↘️. Wrong, steep af downhill with huge uneven steps the entire way ⬇️. Once we got to the bottom we were back along the Thredbo River on another singletrack which was a bit technical and quite muddy. During this section I was definitely convinced my future consisted of only the shortest races on the program 😂.

After a few km along the river we would then climb back to the Eagles Nest from the other side on a windy single track with various types of steps, it looked like it should have been easier than straight up the ski field but it was not 🙅‍♀️. There were some chäirs on the way in the form of old chairlifts and rest assured people were making the most of them 😂🛷. Once we got to the peak and I could see the Eagles Nest in the distance I decided to leg it and ran all the way to the finish which was down the same steep af steps of death from earlier. I overtook 36 runners in the last 4km 👻 to cross the finish line in 8:54:26 🏁.

Hands down the hardest 50km course I have tackled (to date), the course description is entirely inaccurate but it was the most spectacular and beautiful terrain that made it completely worthwhile 🌿.

Taper time so just a little week this week! 🏃‍♀️

The highlight of my week was definitely figuring out what’s going on with my hip thanks to the expert skills of my physio! Turns out it was 99.9% likely caused my fall at CCC 🥴 but it has felt great all week after some treatment!

Sunday was funday. I volunteered at Beerwah@Daybreak with Woody before an afternoon of watching the AFLW GF (go lions 🦁!) and then the Valencia Marathon 🔥 where the aussie females absolutely killed it!

4 days until Kosci 50 🌿

Not long until Kosci! So excited ❄️!

An extra day of rest meant Track Wednesday for some 1km reps, nailed it! Felt so good and super happy with my workout ❤️‍🔥.

Thursday I went for a trot at Bullocky and Friday at Petrie parkrun. Saturday was my anniversary buddy Stacey’s 300th parkrun, I couldn’t go on her grand adventure to Proston to celebrate so she picked a parkrun for me: my not-NL-NENDY! I headed off for a double loop of North Harbour parkrun (sometimes I do parkrun course 2 x to match my plan) which was very enjoyable, a nice grassy course and a small friendly parkrun. On the way home my car battery died 🪫, which seemed fitting considering the adventures Stacey had at Proston 😂

Sunday afternoon called for some sunset trails! I bumped into Brownie and Scottie and we shared a few km up and down / back and forth on Centre Road - so good!! Last long ish run before we ease into the Kosci taper 😃.

I’m excited for a summer of speeeeed after this one 🏎️

2 weeks until Kosci 50 🌿

Another splendid week of fun!

Track Tuesday for a tempo workout, feeling nicely smooth and strong 🏃‍♀️, WW with the gang this week, and Thursday easy 1h at Sandgate 🌊! I actually only went there so I could drop my trumpet off to my sisters (and it was my nephews birthday), but it was so nice I think I’ll visit a bit more.

I did my weekend plans a day earlier so that I could volunteer at SEQ Bayview on Sunday. Friday was a double lap of the Goat Track with a purposeful HARD 2nd up - I really tried to push hard and made my quickest ascent yet 😃. Saturday I was timekeeper at Petrie parkrun ⏱️ before heading off for my long run. I wasn’t feeling too crash hot so I pulled the pin after 2.5h which was better than nothing AND better than suffering for nothing.

Woody and I were sweepers for the Bayview short course today 🧹. It was a beautiful morning for some beautiful trails and we had a great time! Within the first 1.5km we had picked up four injured runners who had turned back, I thought we were in for a big shift but thankfully we didn’t come across any others! Hopefully they are all okay 🤞

Feeling fit and healthy and so excited to see the beauty of Mt Kosciuszko in a few weeks!

3 weeks until Kosci 50 🌿
