A grade report

The Guyra bench looked more like a hospital ward during and after Saturday’s game against Uralla. Ock Atkin’s return lasted barely five minutes before he was carried off and then his fullback replacement Dylan Sutton only lasted a minute longer and he went the same way. And to add insult to injury the first Guyra attacking raid ended with an intercept and a long range try to the Tigers instead. Despite the bad luck, the Spuds fought well in the middle part of the half. It took a glut of possession for Uralla to score its second and make it 12-nil. A real arm-wrestle ensued for much of the half and Guyra should have gone into the break without conceding any more points. However, an error right on halftime allowed the Tigers to score with just 10 seconds on the clock to extend the lead to 16-nil at the break. The other bad news was Robert Sisson limping off at halftime to add to the injury woes. After the interval the Spuds got on the board when Rave Brazier grubbered for Riley Campbell to score out wide on the right. That made it 16-4. The Spuds were hanging in well but Uralla came up with a long-range try from a pass the Green Bay Packers would have been proud of. To make matters worse, Seb Pianko went to the bin for some off-the-ball action in the lead-up. In that 10-minute period the Tigers ran in another score to push the lead out to 26-4. As soon as Seb returned to the field he was in the thick of it again, running off Spuds skipper Ben Vidler and busting through for what proved to be the last try of the game. Ben slotted the conversion for a 26-10 final score. Tommy Ryan and Hugo Brazier were added to the injured list late in the game as Guyra finished it with no one left on the bench. Seb was voted players’ player while club best and fairest points went to Jackson Coote (3), Angus Brazier (2) and Samuel Briggs (1). Guyra is due to host the Moree Boomerangs next Sunday in two grades.

Reserve grade report

The Reggies produced their best performance of the season to finish on top of Uralla at the New Red Hill yesterday. Jayden Field opened his return game for Guyra with the first try of the match when he went over on the left edge. Just a few minutes later and he made it two after Anthony Dittman danced his way through the defence and got close to the Uralla line. Jayden scooted over from the next play but was hurt in the process. It was only an eight minute cameo on his return but a productive one as the Spuds went 10-nil up, following Ditty’s conversion. The Tigers hit back to make it 10-6 before a near miss for the Spuds as Brad Waters’ would-be try was called back for a forward pass. They didn’t have to wait long though as Ditty went on another stepping, stop-start run and then offloaded to Luke Allsopp who reached out and planted it under the cross bar. Ditty’s goal made it 16-6. The scoring wasn’t done for the first half. Luke almost bagged his double but was held up. A moment later Brock Laybutt found space wide on the left and got it down for a 20-6 lead at the break. The second half saw Guyra maintain its momentum with a good last-tackle try. Ditty ran it towards the posts and this time his pass to Brad was all good and he got the ball down. Ditty converted for a 26-6 advantage. The next try was even better and started with another last-tackle run option. This time Ditty offloaded to Zac Atkin, who got it away to Eric Klabe, back to Ditty who flung it wide to Brad and he found Mitch Wratten in space for the try and a 30-6 lead. It was at this point of dominance that the Spuds started to lose their discipline and Uralla gained some momentum. The Tigers hit back with the next two tries and at 30-18 there was still a chance for the visitors. The Spuds settled things inside the last few minuets with Mitch bagging his second after a good shift through the hands to the right edge with plenty of room to move. The final score was 34-18. The players voted Brad Waters as their best for the day and he also scored one club best and fairest point. The three points went to Ditty and two to Brett Beard. The Guyra reggies get a few weeks off again but then have a run of games in the back end of the season.

Leaguetag report

The Spudettes gave up a 12-nil lead in the opening stages of yesterday’s clash with Uralla before Ella Clews scored one of the tries of the year for Guyra. A little blindside raid from their own half by the Spudettes saw Ella in space down the left sideline. She beat four Uralla taggers and ran it in from 50m out. That made it 12-4, but it was the only points in the half for Guyra. The Tigers posted two more tries to take a 22-4 lead into the break. An early error handed Uralla another try straight after halftime, but Guyra pulled one back a few minutes later through skipper Rachel Coles. A good break by Kayla White got the Spudettes on the front foot and two rucks later Rachel ran into some space wide on the left and beat the cover defence to score and make it 26-8. It was all Uralla on the scoreboard after that. The Tigers took advantage of some attacking kicks to push the score out to 42-8 by the fulltime siren. Ella capped her good try with the players’ player award and three club best and fairest points. Rachel scored two clubs points and Taylor Waters picked up one.

A grade report

The Super Spuds returned to winning ways with a solid effort against the Boomerangs at Moree on Saturday. An at times frustrating first half saw the Spuds well on top but not converting chances into points. After a couple of near misses, Billy Youman slid over for the first try of the game and Archie Dowden converted for a 6-nil lead. It could have been more but several other attacking raids came up empty and then the Rangs surprised Guyra with a try from a kick in behind the line for a 6-4 score line. Multiple penalties gave the Spuds plenty of ball at the right end of the field and Tommy Ryan eventually took advantage with a dummy half scoot and try to make it 12-4. With Moree reduced to 12 men for 10 minutes Guyra made the most of the advantage with a third try. This time Jackson Coote split the Moree line and found Robert Sisson backing up on the inside. Robert managed to shake off the last ditch Moree cover and put the ball down behind the posts. At 18-4 the scoreboard was looking more favourable close to halftime but it might have been less so when Moree made a long break in the dying seconds, put two kicks in and threatened to score until Dylan Sutton snuffed out the second kick. Some more Rangs ill-discipline gave Guyra more ball early in the second half and it led to Robert scoring his second, this time running into a gap on a last-tackle play. Almost immediately after Robert bagged his double, Tommy did the same. He pounced from dummy half again and caught the retreating Moree defence at sixes and sevens for a 30-4 lead. The Boomies got one back, again from a good kick behind the Guyra line to cut the score to 30-8. It was only a brief interlude between Guyra tries as Archie scored one of his own soon after to notch up a 36-8 score line. Inside the last 10 minutes the Spuds decided to attack from their own end and sent it wide left to Rave Brazier in space on the touch line. He sprinted past the Moree cover and ran it all the way. Archie’s goal gave him a perfect seven from seven for the day. Just for good measure Ben Vidler then poked over a field goal in the last 20 seconds to complete the scoring, Guyra taking it 43-8. The players voted Jackson as their best for the day while the three club best and fairest points went to Seb Pianko up front, Robert matched his two tries with two points and Tommy and Archie picked up a point each. There is no football on the long weekend, but we are back at home the following Saturday against Uralla in three grades.

Leaguetag report

The Spudettes didn’t adjust to the wet track at Moree in the first 15 minutes and the Boomerangs ran in three tries to take a 16-nil lead. When they finally got the ball the Spudettes went very close to scoring when Kayla White scooted down the blindside and seemed to have gone over, only for the try to be called back for a foot on the touch line. It proved particularly unfortunate because Moree then went the length and added another try of its own. Guyra eventually got on the board when Paige Vickery split the Moree defence and ran around the fullback to put the ball down under the crossbar. Astashia Marr booted the conversion and it was 22-6. Moree added one more touchdown before halftime and went into the break up 28-6. The home side continued to dominate after the interval with two more tries but the back end of the game was much more level as Guyra managed to hold the line and also exert some pressure of its own. Paige scored her second when she backed up a good break from Kayla and once again had too much speed for the cover defence. Kayla landed the goal this time and the score was 40-12. The Rangs scored once more before the end to finish with a 46-12 win. Kayla was voted players’ player while the club best and fairest points went to Paige (3), Matilda Atkin (2) and Rachel Coles (1).
