A Message from Hanshi about His Birthday
Here is my response to the many birthday messages I received—emails, text messages, Facebook messages, and phone calls.
Honestly, a birthday celebration would feel hollow without the many students, their families, friends, and my own family taking the time to send messages simply because it is my birthday. To me, this is such an honour, as I have so much respect for every one of you. Many of the names in these messages go back twenty-five years or more, and I do remember you all. Time passes so quickly, and over the decades I have met people with many different strengths, qualities, and faces. One thing, however, remains constant—the decency and strong character of the individuals who have been, and continue to be, part of my life.
Last Thursday, I spent at least two hours responding to the many text messages. I also received a welcome visit from two of our Black Belts. We shared an interesting conversation about student progress, gradings, and many other topics over a cup of tea, a sandwich, and pumpkin scones.
Over the years, I have met thousands of people from all walks of life. Many are fellow martial artists who have supported our Black Belt gradings, and for this I am truly thankful. I often remind myself that learning is a two-way street—I have learnt a great deal about life, and I hope that through our association, you have as well. There is a saying that only one in ten thousand will make it to Black Belt; my hope is that every student has gained enough experience and knowledge to suit their own needs.
At times, I find myself thinking—how wonderful it would be if everyone who has ever stepped onto the Sakura Ryu mat, or even sat on the side, could come together once more. One thing is certain: everyone who has been part of our dojo would always be warmly welcomed back, along with their families.
Finally, I invite each and every one of you to the next birthday celebration. Until then, take care, my dear friends.
