Tonight we are going to spend some time on guard retention, in particular the hierachy of positions and the direction that you are trying to go. The two most important things to be good at when developing your game is guard retention and pin escapes. You could have the best submissions in the world, but when they fail (and they will) you are often left vulnerable to sweeps, and counter submissions. This can create a mindset of not wanting to attack for fear of making a mistake. If you are confident that your opponent cannot pin you or pass your guard then you will have all the confidence you need to chain together a devastating series of attacks. 6.00pm tonight.

Tomorrow, Sat 20th Of May 11am at Stafford Infinity. I will be working on my endurance as part of my lead up to Worlds this year. I am not looking for tough high level rolls, think more steady state cardio. Much more fun than jogging. Even kids are welcome. If you want to join me for some fun Saturday morning exercise, just turn up. All gyms welcome, no fees. Good excuse to catch up with mat friends. See you tomorrow.

For tonights class Ethan has requested to troubleshoot his back control/rear naked choke. We will be doing this by utilising some positional rounds and controlled resistance. If you would like to work on the same, no problem. If there is another area of your game that you think needs more attention, please come in and work on that. The great thing about keeping the group small is that I have the time to spend with everyone individually and help work towards specific goals. Once we have completed a few rounds I should be able to narrow down any issues to some core movements and concepts to help fast track your progress. Be sure to bring a few problems/question along tonight. If you have any rolling or competition footage of the problem and you feel comfortable sharing with the group, I encourage you to bring that too. See You tonight.

Ok small groupers, tonight we are going to focus on positional rounds. This is basically drilling with various levels of resistance as agreed between you and your partner. You can even ask them to give you specific reactions if you want. Its all about teamwork and learning to use your training time in the most efficient way possible. I plan to focus on passing from the knees, turtle and mount. If you want to work anything else, bring your requests.
See you tonight.

Sorry for the late post everyone, but tonight we will be practicing our collar chokes so bring a gi top. Its very easy to get a tap drilling collar chokes but tough to get them to work against resisting opponents without lots of practice. They are awesome for creating open elbow situations though, and make it easier to set up a secondary attack.

We will cover the basic mechanics, but I really want to give everyone some time to play with the setups and develop your own style and tricks to get your hands to where they need to be. It might be cold tonight so bring some warm clothes for before and more importantly after training. See You tonight.

Just a quick one to let everyone know that there is no Thursday night class this week as I am currently in Sydney. Please feel free to turn up to the Stafford gym if you like. You will be welcomed like family.

Hopefully everyone has had a chance to try out some overhook side entries and attack with the rear naked strangle in the last week. If you have, make sure you bring along all your questions and issues you had tomorrow night. We are going to move on to underhook side back control and the rear naked strangle from that side. The mechanics are slightly different so I want to address that first now that you have had some time to cement the overhook side technique. The underhook side is much more aggressive in how quickly it comes on and often causes a feeling of panic in people who have not felt it before. Also if you want to cover the bow and arrow, bring a gi top and we can look at that too. But the main aim of tomorrow night is to address the escape. Learning how people escape back control was the biggest step forward in me understanding how to control the back, so I would like to pass that knowledge on so that everyone feels confident that the primary goal in their game is Get to the back. From there you can start to make peoples lives miserable. In a fun way! See you tomorrow night at 6.
