Appreciation Post -
Last week saw the Vacsal Senior Football & Netball Carnival come to Wadawurrung Country in Geelong (Kardinia Park) and Portarlington.
This year the Wathaurong Community was represented by 2 football teams and 3 netball teams. Bringing these together is always a tough task, so i want to thank and congratulate Jay, Mikali and Vaughan for their work with the football teams, as well as Rylie and Andrea for the netball teams. all teams performed admirably and it was deadly to see so many poepole involved.
It goes without saying that their are people who put their hands up to support getting teams to the carnival, i want to say thankyou to those sponsors that supported us throughout.
Wathaurong Aboriginal Co Op, Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, Strong Brother Strong Sister, Wanyaari, BLAK BREWS, Corio Community Sports Club, Heritage and also Geelong Screenprinting for the awesome apparel. Well done also to Herschelle Carr, Ethan Liddle, Daniel Measures for their selection in the team of the carnival too!

Thanks to all those that helped and supported in some way, shape or form - theres too many too mention here but you know who you are.

Name - Billy O'toole (billy-jay)
Mob - Waddawurrung
Geelong & District Football League
Club - Corio Devils FNC
Position - Half back / Forward Pocket

BJ is once again on board at the devs after making his return in 2022 after a couple of stints at different clubs in the GDFL and CDFNL.
a fit and firing 23 season saw bj be a part of the resurgence of a competitive Corio outfit where he kicked 20 goals for the year with a highest haul of 4. BJ was also this year an integral part of the Div 2 koorie carnival premiers- Wathaurong.
Billy was also a part of the first Wathaurong carnival team back in ‘15 so it was great to see him back in the fold.

Name - Ian Milera

League - Mininera and District Football League
Club - Penshurst Football Club
Position - small forward

Heading to Penshurst in 2024 with good friend Elijah satalah, to join the already established indigenous roots at the club.
As a Creative small forward Ian Milera was best-on-ground with a four-goal haul in last years Spencer gulf league premiership decider for prop risdon lions - this was while averaging 3 1/2 goals a game as a small fwd.
Ian played and starred in the Div 2 koorie carnival which culminated in a premiership for Wathaurong.

Name - Jy Lambley
Mob - Wadawurrung
League - Western Region Football League Div 1
Club - Parkside Football Club
Position - Mid/Wing & Fwd

Very Successful year for this fella in 2023 winning the WRFL Div 2 Grand Final with a last gasp super goal to seal the match and win by 2 points. This was backed up by a premiership win at the koorie carnival and a best on ground performance in the grand final. Being able to play multiple positions and have impact all over the ground Jy will again be one to watch in 24. Jy also spent time at the bulldogs in the VFL in the past and is looking to make a big impact in Div 1 football after getting promoted for 2024.

Name - Andrew Vella

Club - Penshurst Football Club
Mob: gooreng-gooreng, munanjhalli & gungalu and south sea islander
Position - Full back

The man they call the recruiting guru has been playing out at “Pensy” for a few years now and his impact is felt on and off the field.
Holding down full back for the reserves, Vella is always ready for game day and ensures the mob from geelong come with him. Vella has also been a big part of the Wathaurong carnival program for a few years and was an integral part of this years Div 2 koorie Carnaval premiership this - icing the game with a ‘nail in the coffin’ goal. A big congratulations also goes to Mr and Mrs Andrew and Chloe Vella who got married on the weekend.

Name - Jordan Edwards
League - Geelong & District Football League
Club - Belmont Lions
Mob: Gunditjmara/Waddawurrung/Arrernte
Position: half back

Jordan has gone back home to Belmont, having grown up at the Belmont Lions as one of the many generations of Edwards' to have donned the jumper. He spent last season playing at Russell's Creek. Jordan has flair and pace and is a leader both on and off the field. He not only continues the Edwards legacy at Belmont but also at the West Vic Eels where he is a leader and was part of their successful 2022 koorie carnival premiership in Div 1.

Name - Zac Larkins
League - Geelong Football League
Club - St Albans
Mob - Wiradjuri
Pos - HB/Mid

Zac has spent the majority of his junior career at Newtown in the GFL and that culminated in an U18 premiership this year in Div 1. He has moved to St Albans for 2024 to complete his colts football and work towards opportunities at senior level. Zac reads the ball and the play well and is a great attacking defender. He is a good user of the football and a strong mark for his size. Expect to see a lot of growth under coach Alex Tortora in the coming years. Was also this year an integral part of the Div 2 koorie carnival premiers- Wathaurong Goeems.

Club - Inverleigh Football Club
Mob - Gunditjmara
Pos - Midfield/Forward

2023 premiership and GF best on ground, Jarrod and inverleigh got their grand final revenge to break a 31 year premiership drought.
Jarrod has built his game on being tough and uncompromising and is respected for his approach. Jarrod has previously played at GFL and BFL level and everywhere he has gone his raking left foot and killer hip and shoulder have left their mark.

Name - Mikali Harrison

Club - Belmont Lions
Mob - Gunnai Kurnai/Wotjaboluk
Pos - HB/Mid

Blessed with the skill and evasion as well as wonderful skills, Mikali has thrilled everywhere he has played. Has come back somewhat full circle to play again at Belmont. Has played at GFL, BFL and GDFL level and always excites the fans with X-Factor, can get on top of heads, but can get through legs and put you in a spin. With a full pre season under his belt expect a stand out year. Was also this year an integral part of the Div 2 koorie carnival premiers- Wathaurong as well as being Team manager.

Name - Isaiah Harrison
League - Geelong Football League
Club - St Albans
Mob - Gunnai Kurnai
Pos - HB/Wing

Isaiah played for Leopold in the under 18’s, and was a part of their run to a prelim final this year. Now that he has graduated from the under 18program, ‘issy’ has moved to the rivals, St Albans - to make his way in the GFL as a hard runner with great skills and a high leap. Was also this year an integral part of the Div 2 koorie carnival premiers- Wathaurong
