This morning the Ararat and Stawell archers planted over 300 native plants into our brand new 'field course' in the Great Western Rec Reserve. The new target course weaves through a beautiful patch of remnant grassy woodland that runs alongside our main shooting field.
This patch has an abundance of native wild flowers, as we saw at our community wildflower walk last spring, but lacked a 'midstory' of flowering shrubs, which is an important part of woodland habitats. So after a bit of w**d control over the summer, today we added 10 different shrub and small tree species that will provide habitat and food for native animals, as well as create beautiful 'obstacles' for our archers to weave between as we practice on our new field course.
Thanks to all the club members who came and helped out, and to the Victorian Landcare Grants for funding the project!
