Hi, my name is Fatme Taha and I’m the Head Instructor of Aquatic Flex. For many years, I have suffered from acute pain in my lower back and hips, resulting in weight gain. I could not exercise on land due to my injuries and therefore resorted to water (pool) based exercises such as aqua therapy and aqua aerobics. I have since controlled my weight, and my pain in my hips and lower back is significa

Calories? What's all the fuss?

A calorie is a unit of energy. In the matter of nutrition, calories refer to the energy people get from the food and drink they consume, and the energy they expend in physical activity.

Calorie tracking used by dieticians and nutritionists alike, is key for both weight loss and weight gain. So, knowing your energy input (food consumed) and output (exercise) is very important.

I've attached a link for the Australian health guideline. Have a read, and feel free to try the many calculators that this informative website has to offer.

Thinking lunch/dinner? Why not do a Stir fry.

These meals are quick and easy, healthy, and delicious. So why not cook it more often.

All though preparation can take longer than cooking 😅, but getting the kids involved is the fun part .... washing, peeling, slicing

Try playing around with the ingredients, the type of carbs, vegetables and also the type of Protein used as well.

Carbohydrates examples:
- pasta
- rice
- noodles, rice noodles
- quinoa

Protein examples:
-Your favourite meat, lamb, beef, mince...etc
- chicken
- seafood mix/ favourite individual seafood ingredient, prawns, salmon, shellfish
- plant based protein, tofu, chickpeas, soy products.

Leftovers..... I eat it for breakfast 😝

Whats on the menu? Salmon with no carbs!
Salmon is a fatty fish, cooking it in oil, eating it with avocado salad would add unnecessary calories in a single meal and most likely won't make you feel satisfied.

Instead! Lets play with the ingredients! For example, a person with a large appetite (like myself💁‍♀️) would increase the volume of low calorie ingredients like vegetables 😉 (carrots, capsicums, kale..etc)

A slice of lemon isn't just for looks, it's on the plate for a reason and that is to assist with the process of absorption of the micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients) from food.

I've added sauteed vegetables in a small amount of oil on a high heat. This process keeps them light and crunchy while maintaining the nutrients contained within.
