On Sunday, we had the privilege of training with Shihan Greg Gunns, a true martial arts legend. ๐Ÿ™

Greg began his karate journey back in 1973, earned his black belt in 1977, and today is a 5th Dan in Go Ju Kai. With over five decades of experience, his depth of knowledge and passion for karate is truly inspiring. ๐Ÿ‘Š

It was an honour to learn from someone who has dedicated his life to the martial arts, and a reminder that the spirit of karate is built on consistency, humility, and a lifelong commitment to growth.

Thank you, Shihan, for sharing your wisdom with us โ€“ we are better for it!

When youโ€™re trying to improve your kata, itโ€™s easy to get overwhelmed by trying to fix everything at once. But that scattered focus can actually slow down your progressโ€”or stop it completely.

Instead, get clear on your goal:
๐Ÿ‘Š Are you trying to learn the pattern (embusen)?
๐Ÿ‘Š Or are you working on specific feedback for an upcoming grading or tournament?

โžก๏ธ If youโ€™re learning the pattern, focus on repetitionโ€”donโ€™t stress too much about technique just yet.
โžก๏ธ If youโ€™re working on feedback, break the kata into small chunks (2 to 5 moves), drill them until they feel right, then move on.

This focused approach will skyrocket your improvement over timeโ€”trust the process!

In real-life self-defense, your goals and the attackerโ€™s goals are completely different. They may want to hurt you, rob you, overwhelm you with violence โ€” and you just want to avoid harm and escape safely. Itโ€™s not a fair fight, and itโ€™s not a competition.

In the dojo, however, we train with shared rules and a mutual goal โ€” to win within a safe, structured environment. Thatโ€™s where tournament kumite comes in.

Tournament kumite helps sharpen your timing, distancing, and decision-making under pressure โ€” all skills that translate directly to self-defense. And if youโ€™re someone who doesnโ€™t usually enjoy competition (maybe because of fear of being hurt, fear of losing, or just general discomfort), thatโ€™s exactly why you should give it a go. Facing those fears in a safe environment helps build the kind of confidence that stays with you for life.

To better prepare for real-world scenarios, we also include drills where the aim isnโ€™t to โ€œwinโ€ but to escape โ€” like fighting off two attackers while trying to reach a safe zone. The attackers behave like real threats โ€” using deception, pressure, unpredictability โ€” and you learn how to respond under that kind of stress.

And of course, the best self-defense is to avoid the situation altogether. De-escalation and awareness are your first tools. But if you do need to defend yourself, having trained properly means youโ€™ll have the skill โ€” and more importantly, the confidence โ€” to do whatโ€™s necessary.

Sensei Clint

In kata, we often freeze our stances into fixed postures during practice, but in real application, movements are fluid and continuous.

Using counts or pause points in training helps us understand the transitions โ€” whether weโ€™re shifting weight, dropping, or pulling. Recognising how energy flows is often the first step to unlocking what the kata is actually trying to teach us.

According to Kenwa Mabuni, founder of Sh*to-Ryu Karate, kata must adapt to the situation, like water taking the shape of its container. He warned against assuming that turning in a specific direction means an attack is coming from that angle.

For example:
โžก๏ธ A 90ยฐ turn doesnโ€™t always mean youโ€™re facing a new opponent โ€” it might just be the angle youโ€™re taking relative to the same attacker.
โžก๏ธ A 180ยฐ turn often indicates repositioning behind the attacker.

Mabuni gave us two golden rules when interpreting angles:
1๏ธโƒฃ Keep the enemy in front of you โ€” but avoid standing directly in front of them.
2๏ธโƒฃ Move towards what you know, and away from what you donโ€™t โ€” meaning work to the opponentโ€™s closed side, not into their weapons.

Letโ€™s also consider Anko Itosu, a pioneer of modern karate. He reminded us that kata was never designed for sport or consensual sparring โ€” it was built for self-defence. Kata assumes close-range confrontation and prioritises control, escape, and efficiency.

The hikite (pulling hand) is often misunderstood. Its role isnโ€™t decorative โ€” it tells you where the opponent is or helps you clear a limb to strike effectively. Thatโ€™s it. Two simple purposes, but both essential.

Learn the embusen (pattern) and practice the solo form โ€” itโ€™s great for coordination and fitness.
2๏ธโƒฃ Drill the bunkai with a partner โ€” repetition builds instinct.
3๏ธโƒฃ Understand the principles behind each move โ€” know the why, not just the what.
4๏ธโƒฃ Pressure test โ€” bring the concepts into live practice and evolve through experience.

The students we push the hardest are often the ones who show the most promise. When a sensei spots raw talentโ€”sharp reflexes, fast learners, natural athleticismโ€”our mission is to help it grow the right way.

But hereโ€™s the catch: talent can trick you into skipping the grind. Miss enough basic stances and sloppy habits creep in. Over-confidence kicks in. Eventually, the flash fades and the cracks show.

Thatโ€™s why we circle back to fundamentalsโ€”stances, hip rotation, correct guardโ€”again and again (and again!).

So if your instructor rides you on your front-stance width or makes you throw another hundred gyaku-zuki, take it as the hugest compliment. We see your potential, and we donโ€™t want you settling for โ€œpretty goodโ€ when โ€œworld-classโ€ is within reach.

The world might be a simulation โ€” or at least, it sure feels like it sometimes. I believe life is about creating our own reality. Through our conscious thoughts โ€” or even by default โ€” we shape the world around us. Itโ€™s like a game weโ€™re playing, one we get to design however we choose. If we believe something is possible (or not), weโ€™re right. If we think something is easy or hard, weโ€™re right again.

My role in this lifetime is to decide what I want to create, design it vividly in my mind, believe itโ€™s already here โ€” and let it feel easy and effortless.

This idea isnโ€™t hard to grasp when you apply it to something simple and physical. If I have a small plot of land and imagine it as a vibrant flower garden or a thriving veggie patch, and I take action toward that vision, it comes to life. If I donโ€™t believe it will work, Iโ€™ll probably sabotage myself โ€” and it wonโ€™t.

The same principle applies on a bigger scale: imagine what I want, create a plan, speak life into it โ€” and let momentum do its thing.

To keep that mindset strong, I surround myself with books, people, and conversations that support it. Because my #1 job as a leader is to create, live, and broadcast a compelling vision for our region โ€” and to bring others with me.
