We teach from 6 month old babies to stage 4 and beginner adults. My name is Cathy Burbridge. I have been a swim teacher for 11 years now. My passion is water safety and passing on a love for the water to the people I teach. In July 2016 I was very fortunate to be awarded the Austswim 2016 Swim Teacher of the Year award. I am very privileged to be in a position to set up this small swim school at m

y home. Here, I plan to gently teach babies, young children and adults to swim in what I think are the most beautiful surroundings in Perth. There will only be one class at a time, so my pupils will feel comfortable and safe with no noisy distractions (except maybe a noisy ringneck or kookaburra!). We will have a 'home from home" atmosphere where people can blossom and develop that love of the water and hopefully our natural surroundings at the same time. My other teachers are Abigail, Tianna and Charlie and as a team we are passionate about water safety and teaching babies, kids and adults alike a love of water and swimming.

I am still in Canada unfortunately, so not advertising all the spaces I have available yet, but we do have some Level 1 spots I'd like to fill before I get back. These are suitable for 4 year old and older beginners. There is space on Wednesday at 3.15pm and Friday at 3:30pm. If you would like one of these spaces, please EMAIL me the following:

I have to travel overseas at short notice for a family emergency. If you are looking for lessons, I am not taking any new enrolments until I have assessed my family situation. I will not be replying to any emails in the meantime. When I know what is happening, I will advertise any spaces on this page. As we come up to the school holidays, this is a timely reminder to check the conditions before swimming.

If you get caught in a rip, remember to:

👉 relax, signal for help and float
👉conserve your energy and stay calm
👉 raise your arm and call out to others if you need help

Floating with the current may return you to shallow waters, and stronger swimmers may be able to escape the rip current by swimming slowly and steadily to the side of the rip, toward breaking waves.

The best way to avoid a rip is to swim at a patrolled beach between the red and yellow flags. Find one near you at: beachsafe.org.au
