Starting over as an adult

The hardest part of karate for an adult can happen before the warm-up.

Walking through the door.
You have a career.�People depend on you.�You spend most of your day being expected to know what you are doing.

Then someone shows you how to stand.
Your feet feel wrong.�Your shoulders tighten.�You forget the instruction you heard ten seconds ago.

And a person half your age makes it look easy.
That can be a difficult place to stay.

Stay anyway.

There is courage in letting yourself be seen learning.�In asking the question again.�In accepting a correction without explaining why you needed it.

Every experienced person in that room once needed someone to show them where to put their feet.
Your turn is allowed to begin today.

A white belt gives you somewhere to start.

FIRST CLASS FEAR IS NORMAL.

Almost nobody walks into a Kyokushin dojo feeling completely ready.

You notice the belts.
The sharp techniques.
The conditioning.
The sound of people hitting pads.
The confidence everyone else seems to have.

And suddenly, every insecurity gets louder.

“Am I too out of shape?”
“Am I too old?”
“What if I embarrass myself?”

Here’s the part beginners rarely understand:

The people you’re watching once felt exactly like that.

Nobody started with perfect stances, perfect timing, or fearless kumite.

They started awkward.
They started unsure.
They started tired.

But they started.

That first class is not a test of whether you already belong.

It is a test of whether you are willing to begin before you feel ready.

Kyokushin does not ask you to arrive fearless.

It teaches you what happens when you act while fear is still present.

One class becomes a week.
A week becomes months.
And one day, a nervous beginner walks through the door and looks at you like you have always been confident.

You’ll know better.

You were simply willing to walk in.

Nobody walks in ready.
They walk in

🥋🏆 WHAT AN INCREDIBLE DAY FOR OUR TEAM! 🏆🥋

Today our team competed at the Queensland State Championships of the National All-Stars Martial Arts Circuit — and what a result!

We had 12 competitors enter and EVERY SINGLE ONE CAME HOME WITH A MEDAL! 🥇🥈🥉

Firsts, seconds and thirds across the team, with some of our competitors picking up multiple placings. An absolutely outstanding effort from everyone who stepped onto the mats.

But what made us even prouder than the medals was the way our team represented our dojo. Everyone showed great sportsmanship, courage and respect, supported each other and genuinely enjoyed the atmosphere and the experience.

We trained hard. We competed hard. And we kicked butt! 👊🔥

A huge congratulations to all 12 competitors. You should be extremely proud of what you achieved today.

But we're not finished yet...

🇦🇺 Next stop: the Australian Championships in November! 🇦🇺

Now it's back to the dojo. We train harder, sharpen our skills and get ready to take on the best at the Nationals.
