2 years since I had the amazing opportunity to bring yoga to Goondiwindi State High School for Expressive Arts Week.

It really was a privilege to teach so many people in the town and beyond. 🖤

B A C K T O S C H O O L: What a day. When I was asked by Goondiwindni High School to come and teach their students yoga through ‘Expressive Arts Week’ I jumped at the chance. I am a strong believer in giving young people opportunities, chances to try something different and to discover a love or a talent they may have never known they possessed.

Well day one complete and I am totally blow away. Firstly by the fact that ‘expressive arts week’ is even a THING, not only that but it is in its 20th year! I’m so impressed with the opening parade, the dancing, singing, dramatics oh and the teachers - absolutely brilliant efforts from all the teaching staff’s performances.

Now let me get onto the yoga. You never know how teenagers will respond to things especially when it comes to the body & moving the body, but I have never been so impressed. Starting off with a special needs class these kids blew me away, seriously nailed it, so much so that some came back for more at lunch time! A fabulous group signed up for the recess class, a nice mix of girls and boys, infact we had more boys which was excellent to see. Period 3 gracefully moving together, 30 year 12s who were a real joy, a great laugh and I think pleasantly surprised at how much they enjoyed yoga.

For me it is important for teenagers to to have a release from the hectic academic system, competitive sporting arenas and claustrophobic online worlds, to be IN THE MOMENT, present with nothing but themselves listening and learning how their body feels and moves. This is a time of change and growth and incorporating yoga at this time of life is the perfect way to develop emotionally and physically stronger. 🖤💫 Thank you for having me and for welcoming me into your school today so warmly. I will be back again tomorrow and can not wait!

Yoga is different for everyone. Our practice has a different reason and meaning every time we come to the mat, but one constant is the mental release and relief it provides.

Whether we realise it or not we all need a space and some time to ourselves to just breathe.

I know that for many the concept of yoga is daunting or ‘not for you’ but It’s not until we give it a go that we really see the necessity.

Yoga isn’t about complicated shapes made by your body, its about the simplistic shift of your mind from racing at 100 mph to focusing on the moment.

Your mind is a powerful tool, handle it with care. 💚

What did you pick up whilst social was down?

Did it make you realise how much of your day you spend scrolling?

Did it put you in panic mode or were you more at ease not having the distraction?

Had it made you think differently about your mobile usage?

YIN YOGA.
Deep static stretching helps manipulate the fascia, tendons, ligaments and muscles for very focused mobility assisted by the breath.

It’s so important to breathe deeply with intention when practicing asana held for long periods of time to ease the discomfort, mover further into the pose and find more space.

Yin yoga is a slow pace which can leave time for your mind to wonder, try to concentrate on yourself, on your body on your mat. Notice what you are feeling physically and mentally. Yin is very taxing mentally. Working through discomfort, with the aim of relaxing through the difficulties is great practice for everyday life.

Thank you to .alexjones.ncfit & for today’s practice. 🙏🏼

It is true, so many of us live and accept a level of stress as our baseline that it’s become so ‘normal’ we don’t know what feeling relaxed is anymore.

Stress can feel like a baseline condition for many of us – especially during a pandemic. But there are ways to help alleviate the very worst of it, whether through support, sleep or radical self-care

RELAXATION DAY
Relaxation is an emotional and psychological sate of mind - it is the physical stillness and calm. It is living without or with reduced stress, tension, pressure for a period of time. Relaxation is usually doing something that elevates the symptoms of depression, anxiety, panic, fear, and anger.

As well as mental health benefits, doing something ‘relaxing’ also improves your physical by lowering heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate, reducing muscle tension and chronic pain, aids digestion (stress has a huge impact on the gut).

Relaxation comes in many forms and can be very subjective: reading, drawing a bath, lighting candles, a hot cup of tea, a walk outside, playing with your dog, an exercise class, practicing yoga, breathing, cooking, going for a drive… what is relaxing for one person won’t be for another but as long as whatever you are doing slows your mind down and for a period of time takes your mind off of your worries and fears… bringing you into the present, you have found ‘relaxation’.

THE BODY KEEPS THE SCORE.
** THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON THE BODY **

There is no denying life is stressful. The constant rush of getting things done, family pressures, financial strain, uncertainty, health issues, kids, work, the never-ending emails.

‘Don’t sweat the small stuff’ and ‘there are far worse things going on’ are phrases often thrown about in a bid to try and ‘help’ but sometimes these can just fuel the fire because it's all relative right?

We know that stress is bad, it makes us feel pretty s**t, but stress is far more than a feeling of worry. Stress is actually a KILLER.

Our body soaks up everything, our environment, our thoughts, the energy from others and it manifests in some pretty serious ways. You may be experiencing the effects of stress in your body without even realising it is related… Stress has an impact on your PHYSICAL, MENTAL, EMOTIONAL & BEHAVIOURAL being.

It is so important to recognise stress and take actions to help relieve it before it builds up to cause major health issues. It is ok to feel stressed and it is ok to ask for help, as mentioned, a symptom of stress can be feeling overwhelmed.

Stop for a moment and ask yourself:

What am I feeling right now?
What is the main source of why I am feeling this way?
What 3 things could I do right now to help me feel better (even if its a short term thing to give you space to think more clearly)
Who can I ask to help me?

There will always be stressful periods in life and there will always be some sort of pressure, no-one no matter what or who they are will ever be 100% stress-free. It’s just about HOW you manage it and putting into place a system to unwind and relax regularly in a healthy way.
