Firstly I don’t feel homeschooling is the right thing for many families.
It takes more time, and energy and space to create the best environment.
Here’s the main reason we choose to homeschool.
‘To encourage our children to lead their own lives.’
We encourage our children to follow their interests, and have the space to do so throughout their days.
They then learn skill sets throughout exploring those interests.
For example.
My son loves Pokemon cards.
So we allow him time and space to explore different cards, we take him to trade expos, he is building a collection and he buys and sells them online.
One could think that paper cards are a waste of time.
However he is learning trading, buying, selling, speaking, value, negotiation, art, trends, communication, counting, maths, reading, and he is making friends with others along the way.
He’s learning skillset, through life experiences within the things he is interested in.
It’s not perfect, but it more reflects how we operate in life as an entrepreneur.
I can look back at my own life, I spent the first 12 years of my life being told what to do, and learn and what was important.
Sure I could choose my own subjects later in high school, but it was limited within the curriculum that was offered.
Then I was able to do what was important to me outside of school and on the weekends…
No wonder when I left school I had no idea what the f**k I wanted to be.
I hadn’t been exercising my muscle of trusting myself and leading my life, and had to learn that when I was an adult, and was waiting for someone to tell me what to do.
Again, I’m not here saying homeschooling is the best way for every child.
However I do feel that a child can be encouraged to self lead at a young age outside of school, and encouraged to follow their interests.
Instead of asking what do I feel is best for our children, what is emerging out of them that can be explored.
