Southern Cross Martial Arts is a progressive, traditional martial art with age specific classes in locations thru out the Gold Coast. Our Children's programs aim initially develop the concentration and physical skills required to boost confidence and have them walking tall into their teen years. Our curriculum t

akes into account the various leaning styles of children from 5 to 8 years and from 8 to 12 years. With this knowledge we have formulated a curriculum that will keep the children moving forward with enthusiasm for a number of years. All the time learning how to create good healthy habits and practical ways to defend themselves in the more common playground situations that often arise. Our teen classes are a blend of sport, fitness and art that keeps them enthusiastic about exercising and socializing in a group of like minded peers. We consider it important to place focus on development of exercise technique to set up our teens for a lifetime of strength, skill and knowledge of the basics in regards to exercise science and bio mechanics. At the same time we aim to help them out not only with the physical necessities of self defence , but verbal boundary setting techniques as well as the legal and ethical implications when it comes to using any type force against others. There are opportunities to compete in a variety of combat sports as the student progresses if they choose. There are also opportunities for leadership training and school based trainee-ships for longer term members. 6 new Black Belts yesterday.
A 3 hour long grading saw 6 new Black Belts. Huge congratulations to these kids who thrived during this intense physical exam that took them to the limits of what their conscious mind could handle while asking for recall on a variety of patterns and exercises, striking and grappling, with live sparring rounds and teamwork.
Extra special thank you to our young coloured belt members who came along to help with sparring and other jobs around the dojo as the afternoon ran. You helped to elevate these guys and in doing so, you elevated yourselves too. Extra special respect to all of the members who were unable to grade and still came along for support, it will come back at you guys..
Always big thanks to our black belts who came too to assess and instruct.
Of course the parents for all of the ups and downs in motivation over the past 8 to 10 years of these guy’s training lives.
Super proud of everyone and their achievements.

Do kids need things to go perfectly to improve?
Not at all. In fact, the opposite is true.
This week, we’re reinforcing that mistakes and challenges are part of learning. The key is sticking with it and adjusting along the way.
That’s how adaptability is built — and how kids develop real confidence. 👊

How does your child respond when they feel frustrated?
Whether it’s school, sport, or training, frustration is part of learning.
This week, we’re focusing on helping students stay calm under pressure, so they can think clearly and make better decisions.
Because when kids learn to control their reactions, they’re able to adapt and keep improving. 💪

Does your child give up when something doesn’t work the first time?
Learning isn’t about getting it right straight away. It’s about adjusting, trying again, and finding a better way.
This week, we’re chatting to students to understand that progress comes from problem-solving — not perfection.
When kids learn to adapt, they don’t just improve in training… they improve everywhere. 🥋

What happens when things don’t go your child’s way?
This week in our Chats we will discuss the many hurdles that we face in all types of activities. Struggle is often unavoidable, what a great opportunity for an important lesson!
In martial arts (and in life), things don’t always go to plan. A technique doesn’t work, a partner is different, or something just feels harder than expected.
This week, we will chat in class about how to respond when that happens, not by getting frustrated, but by staying calm and trying again.
That’s where adaptability starts… and where confidence begins to grow. 👊

Are your child’s habits helping them… or holding them back?
Habits are built quietly, one small decision at a time.

This week, we’re talking about how choosing the easy option too often can create habits of giving up, not just in training, but in:
✅ Sleep
✅School
✅Diet
In fact in everyday routines.

The good news?
Habits can be changed — and strong habits create confident kids. 👊

Are kids really “too busy”… or just distracted?

Between screens, games, and everything competing for attention, it’s easy for kids to say they’re too busy for the things that matter.

In fact it is easy for most adults too.

This week, we’re helping students recognise the difference between being busy and being distracted

We will chat to our members in class about why good habits mean doing what’s important first.

It’s a small shift, but one that builds responsibility and focus and can be massive over time. 💪
