Southern Cross Martial Arts is a progressive, traditional martial art with age specific classes in locations thru out the Gold Coast. Our Children's programs aim initially develop the concentration and physical skills required to boost confidence and have them walking tall into their teen years. Our curriculum takes into account the various leaning styles of children from 5 to 8 years and from 8 to 12 years. With this knowledge we have formulated a curriculum that will keep the children moving forward with enthusiasm for a number of years. All the time learning how to create good healthy habits and practical ways to defend themselves in the more common playground situations that often arise. Our teen classes are a blend of sport, fitness and art that keeps them enthusiastic about exercising and socializing in a group of like minded peers. We consider it important to place focus on development of exercise technique to set up our teens for a lifetime of strength, skill and knowledge of the basics in regards to exercise science and bio mechanics. At the same time we aim to help them out not only with the physical necessities of self defence , but verbal boundary setting techniques as well as the legal and ethical implications when it comes to using any type force against others. There are opportunities to compete in a variety of combat sports as the student progresses if they choose. There are also opportunities for leadership training and school based trainee-ships for longer term members. To be fair, adults aren't much different.

We know we should exercise, get enough sleep, finish that job or put the phone down....but as Bruce lee said

"to know is not enough, you must apply".

Do successful kids fail less or simply keep going longer?

Every black belt has made thousands of mistakes.

Good athletes lose games.

Good students get answers wrong.

Talented children struggle with new things.

Success isn't a life without setbacks.

It's learning what to do after them.

That's been our message this month as we explored resilience:
✅Learn from it.
✅Get back up.
✅Keep moving forward.
We don't need children to win every time.

We want them developing the confidence to know:

“You don't have to win today. You just have to get back up.”

That's a skill they'll carry far beyond martial arts. 🥋

What does your child do when something doesn't seem fair?
This may be one of the harder parts of resilience.
A referee makes a call they disagree with.
Someone else gets selected.
A teacher makes a decision they don't understand.
They don't grade when a friend does.
The feelings are real:
😡anger
🥺embarrassment
😒disappointment or frustration.
Rather than telling children simply “Don't be upset,” we can teach them to recognise what's happening:
Feel it → Name it → Choose your response.
We can't promise children that everything in life will always be fair.
We can help them develop the skills to handle themselves when it isn't.
That's a very different kind of strength. 👊

Focus on the process, not just the result.
We often mention to the kids that they need to get things wrong many times before it is perfect. So let’s get started with the process rather than the end result.
A kick, throw, kata, maths problem or football skill might take dozens…….perhaps hundreds of attempts before it starts to click.
We sometimes become so focused on children succeeding that we forget how important struggling with something can be.
This week we're talking about grit: being willing to stay with something worthwhile when it isn't easy.
Children need opportunities to discover:
“I couldn't do it... then I practised... and eventually I could.”
Things worth having are often hard to get. Getting it wrong is part of getting better.
Trust the process.

We chat on the mat this month with the kids about Resilience.
The image below that we have generated is not the sight that we like to see too often watching kids sport.
They miss a grading. They don't make the team. They lose a game. Or perhaps they simply can't perform a new skill yet.
These moments can be disappointing…………. but they're also opportunities to build resilience.
Our goal isn't to remove every disappointment from a child's path. It's to help them learn that one result doesn't define them.
A setback gives us a choice: “I'm no good at this” or “What do I need to do next?”

What do you do when nobody is watching?

The strongest leaders aren't always the loudest.

They're the people others can trust.

They tell the truth.
They admit mistakes.
They take responsibility for their actions.

Leadership and integrity go hand in hand.

Because people will follow someone who is honest, reliable, and willing to do the right thing..............even when it's difficult.

The game changes.

You have to work with someone different.

Things aren't always exactly how we want them.

Good leaders don't complain about the situation.

-----They adapt.-----

They stay calm.
They look for solutions.
They help others stay positive.

This month we're teaching students that adaptability is one of the most important leadership skills they can develop.

Because the people around us often take their cues from how we respond when things become difficult. 👊
