I had the absolute pleasure of catching up with the incredible Wendy Gunn recently and what a woman, what a career and what a story.

Wendy is an absolute icon in our hairdressing industry, with more than 50 years of experience behind the chair, as a salon owner, colourist, educator and industry leader.

But one of my favourite parts of Wendy’s story is this…

When the opportunity came to enter the L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy, Wendy nearly talked herself out of it.

She could have told herself she was too old.
She could have decided her competition days were behind her.
She could have simply not entered.

Instead, she thought, NO. I’m going for it.

And thank goodness she did.

Wendy won the Australian L’Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy in 2018 and then travelled to Paris in 2019, where at 69 years of age she became the FIRST AUSTRALIAN to win the GLOBAL L’Oréal Professionnel Style & Colour Trophy.

How bloody incredible is that?!

For me, Wendy’s story is such an important reminder that there is no expiry date on success.

You are never too old to enter.
Never too experienced to keep learning.
Never too late to try something new.
And you certainly don’t have to quietly step aside because you’ve reached a certain age or stage in your career.

Wendy continues to be incredibly passionate about our industry. She owns Ink For Hair in Brisbane with her daughter, is passionate about education and developing other hairdressers, and is now Queensland State Manager for Smiths Collective Brands.

And she’s still creating, learning, educating and contributing to our industry.

THIS is what a career in hairdressing can look like.

I absolutely loved sitting down and talking all things hair, business, education and the industry with Wendy and I’m very excited to say…

I will ALWAYS back a hairdresser who wants to step out on their own. ❤️

I’ll cheer you on. I’ll help you set up. I’ll show you how to price, market yourself, find clients and build a successful independent business.

But I’ll also tell you when something isn’t the right way to do it.

Taking, downloading or printing a salon’s client list and contacting those clients to tell them where you’re going? Massive no. 🚫

Going behind your employer’s back and handing out cards or secretly telling clients where to find you? That’s not how we need to do business.

Remember…….. that salon, and the person who built it, helped put you in front of those clients in the first place.

There should be gratitude and respect for that.

And the beautiful thing is… you don’t need to take anyone’s client list to succeed.

We have the internet at our fingertips.

Post on your socials.
Introduce yourself in your local Facebook groups.
Show people what you do.
Share your work.
Tell your story.
Build your own name.

And most importantly… back yourself enough to believe that people WILL find you.

You can build something incredible without trying to damage what somebody else has built.

There are more than enough clients to go around. We don’t need to operate from competition, fear or scarcity.

I want to see an industry where salon owners support the next generation of independents, and where hairdressers leaving employment do it with honesty, gratitude and respect.

Go out on your own. Be brave. Build the business.

Just leave with grace. ❤️

Your reputation will follow you far longer than any client list ever will.
