🥬 🏋🏻♂️ Is Nutrition and Exercise our new Medicine ❓❓❓
We all know the benefits of regular exercise ( if not you can find 12 benefits I listed on this page earlier !!! A quick search will find it !)
It is a fairly comprehensive list if you want to live a healthy and long life.
But are we doing enough !
Research is telling us what we eat also influences our disease risk !
Our typical western diet of over processed food ( which is quick and convenient ) is not providing enough.
❌Not enough -
✅ Vitamins and minerals- lack of these may cause heart problems, immune dysfunction and increase risks of cancers.
✅ Benefits of plant compounds- namely antioxidants. These protect cells from damage and an antioxidant ( namely polyphenol ) has been linked to have lower rates of depression, diabetes, dementia, and heart disease
✅ Fiber – Which is great for digestion, our gut bacteria and 💩 ! Fiber decreases inflammation, boosts our immune system. Without it we are seseptable to colon cancer and stroke.
✅ Proteins – to aid immune function, muscle synthesis, metabolism, and growth.
✅ Healthy Fats- to help absorb nutrients, regulate inflammation and are shown to improved heart and immune health.
Research shows diets high in sugary drinks, fast food, and refined grains are leading contributors to illness like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
These processed foods harm our gut bacteria and promote insulin resistance, chronic inflammation and give you higher disease risk.
I’m not saying food is the only answer and there isn’t a need for pharmaceuticals at all but seems some people go to the doctors to get fixed with pills when they need to fix their intake first to give them the best chance.
Pills may fix your sypmtoms but what are the causes ! Food for thought ! 🧐
Other things to consider, family history of disease, stress, age, smoking, alcohol, lack of exercise etc.
Foods that help our health !
✅ Berries.
✅Cruciferous vegetables. eg broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, bok choy, arugula, Brussels sprouts
✅ Fatty fish. eg Salmon, sardines etc
✅ Mushrooms.
✅ Spices. eg Turmeric, ginger, cinnamon
✅ Herbs. eg parsley, oregano, rosemary, and sage
✅ Green tea.
✅ Nuts, seeds, avocados, olive oil, honey, seaweed, and fermented foods
I think this ‘CrossFit motto’ hits the nail on the head !!!
“eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar” and “keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat.”
