Longford 1967...Even when you are world champion, you get little help to push your car aside from your mechanic chipping in. Can anyone name the spectators to Sir Jack having to push his own car ?? (Hartley colection)

A photo we have used before, but worth running again as its a beauty. Grant Bingley in the Springer Buchanan, attacking the hairpin at Symmons Plains in 1985, with a swarm of local sporties on his heels.

A bit of positive media for the 'then' young Mark McLaughlin. Mark hustled this Elfin mighty quickly against a swarm of Cheetahs back then, and more often than not, came out on top...(Don Elliott collection)

Symmons Plains, the original pit lane thinking 1972 ??.. A round of the Formula 2 championship. The tropical Symmons Plains weather we have all come to treat with well deserved suspicion, has elected to make life a misery for this field, slicks being exchanged for wets (Rob Burnett collection)

Just about everyone who frequented Symmons Plains through the years up to the early 1990's, visited the Women for Wheels canteen, near the old scrutineering bay. Many a hot drink, scalding hot pie or homemade salad roll being dispensed over the years by the girls who often turned nothing into something. Enduring at times freezing cold Symmons Plains mornings creating a pleasant place to grab a hot drink and something to eat. Sadly, newer is not necessarily better than what we had.

The HRCCT post of Mick Watt at Quorn Hall yesterday, has led to the HRCCT archives being consulted to find this photo of Quorn Hall taken during a visit there several years ago. Built during WW2, it was a very long and wide runway for bombers to use. Thankfully it was never used for the purpose it was built for. With a concrete foundation and bitumen surface, building it in the Tasmanian midlands would have been a major undertaking. Post war the local council gradually stripped most of the bitumen off, melted it down and reused it on local roads. This venue was used for many years for motorsport after WW2. It was used prior to Longford, (which was a once a year event) and well before Baskerville and Symmons Plains. Upon the two 'new' circuits opening (1958 & 1960) use of Quorn Hall was limited to club motorsport. When visited by the HRCCT some years ago, the late Greg Ellis turned up in his MGA for the visit, producing a small trophy he won in the very car he had driven there, during a sprint event at the venue held by the MG Car Club in 1962.

Something a bit more contemporary, but still near 40 years ago. Phil Sutton prepping to have a run at what appears to be a practice day at Baskerville 86/87 in his Elfin 623 F2. Phil is still competing to this day, now racing a very rapid Ralt. The Sutton brothers Phil, Andrew and Matt have competed for many years and have been major contributors to the motorsport fabric within our State

Longford, March 1966. Aside from the astounding spectacle of the Elfin, Ferrari et al starting their race...look at the crowd. The scale and impact of the Longford Race Meeting upon the Tasmanian Community has dimmed with time. Well before the V8 Supercars and events such as Agfest, the Long Weekend at Longford surpassed attendance numbers proportional to population of the day, and provided the delight of the best in the world, coming to Longford. Thankfully we still have many people about who were there, with plenty still about who raced. But anyone under the age of 60 was not given the opportunity to experience it. (unattributed image)
