The Hobart Outrigger Canoe Club (HOCC) affiliated with Paddle Tasmania in June. Welcome!

Outrigger Canoeing (OC) is a popular modern sport. But it’s also one of the oldest paddle sports, tracing its roots back to the ancient Polynesian cultures who populated the Pacific; people who knew a thing or two about canoeing. The canoes, comprising a main hull (va’a) and an outrigger (ama) with connecting struts (iako), range from single and double-person canoes up to six-person canoes. They are used for everything from recreational paddling through to elite racing and open-ocean paddling.

The HOCC’s inaugural event under the Paddle Tasmania umbrella was last weekend at the Derwent Canoe Club’s flatwater race on the Huon River at Franklin. HOCC brought two six-person canoes (OC6s), sparking curiosity both on and off the water. Competing against a field of mostly ocean racing skis, the OC’s acquitted themselves respectably, with the canoes completing the 6km course in comparable times.

‘From the moment we arrived, our members felt genuinely welcome and part of the paddle community,’ said HOCC President Scott Cranfield. ‘The smiles, laughter and encouragement on and off the water reflected exactly what paddling should be about: friendship, inclusion, and a shared passion for being on the water. Our members finished the day full of energy, with spirits higher than when they arrived, and excited about what lies ahead. As our first event as part of the Paddle Australia and Paddle Tasmania family, it reinforced that we have found a community where Outrigger Canoeing belongs, and we look forward to sharing many more events together.’

Catering to members aged 5 and above, HOCC welcomes new members. Whether it’s the competitive or adventure aspects that appeal, or the physical and mental wellbeing benefits of this social paddling activity, contact the Hobart Outrigger Canoe Club to give it a go: [email protected].

What a day out for the club.
The first time in many years we have as a club paddled in an event at home.
As members of Paddle Australia we extend a huge thanks to Paddle Tasmania and Derwent Canoe Club and the other paddlers for their warm welcome.
2 OC6s used this opportunity to enjoy the Huon River at Frankin and took a quick look at one of iconic vessels of Tasmania being the Cartella as she is tied up at the Wooden Boat Centre.

Hey community.
This Sunday the club is attending the Derwent Canoe Club event at Franklin which is our first event under Paddle Tas. We are so looking forward to this.

The following Sunday 19th July at 9.00am we will be back at Cremorne and although Neil the Seal should be long gone, our Cremorne outings have been awesome.

Some happy snaps from our last paddle at Cremorne. I thought I would also add a picture of the Incat ferry we stopped to have a look at last weekend. Just to demonstrate we are enjoying some variety in our paddling as we experience our environment from the water.

We welcome anyone from the community. The sport is a truly family based sport, from 5 years of age, with no prior experience necessary and equipment is available. The sport is also a perfect corporate activity for any business to consider.

Reach out if you would like any further info.

As we braved the conditions this morning, the water was accommodating as we stopped for a peak at the latest of the Incat ferries, the world's largest all electric ferry, just before it heads off to the new owner in South America. 250 tonnes of batteries will operate between Argentina and Uruguay, it will get a ride to its knew home on the worlds largest heavy lift ship "Black Marlin"
