Glenelg Baseball Club

Glenelg Baseball Club The Glenelg Baseball Club was founded in 1931 at the commencement of district baseball in South Australia. It is a dedicated, year round baseball facility.

The Glenelg Baseball Club, located close to picturesque Glenelg beaches and Jetty Road, is welcoming to everyone and prides itself in fielding high performing, competitive men's, women's and junior teams in all age groups. We did not have a “home” until a lease was signed with the West Beach Trust in 1959 for a playing field at Anderson Reserve, Anderson Avenue, Glenelg North. This land was subseq

uently developed and games were first played at the reserve in 1961. Over the years several major developments of the club’s playing fields and facilities have been made, making Glenelg one of the few clubs in South Australia which complies with international standards and capable of hosting international competitions. The Glenelg Baseball Club is situated on 7ha of land within the West Beach Trust Recreation Park (Adelaide Shores). There are 3 full size grass diamonds with cutouts - all with permanent 2 metre high home run fences and backstops. There are 2 fully enclosed netted and powered batting cages and a number of bullpens (pitcher training stations) scattered around the facility. The club currently enters no less than 6 senior and 6 junior teams in the South Australian Baseball Leagues competition. We also enter teams in the South Australian Winter Baseball Association. Since 1970, the club has hosted the annual South Australian Country Championships. Up to 12 Country Associations have spent the long weekend in October each year in the only event in which they compete against one another. It has always been a big social event for the country players, many of them bringing their families to the city for the weekend, resulting in over 200 players, officials and their families staying in the Glenelg area. The Club Members are accustomed to hosting visiting teams and events such as National and International Championships. We have developed a reputation for being great hosts and providing top class service to our visitors. The Club has hosted teams from visiting American naval ships, Japanese teams on demonstration tours and American College teams.

VALE’ - GARRY RYAN

It is sadness we have been informed of the passing of Garry Ryan.

Garry Ryan’s involvement with the Glenelg Baseball Club began in 1963 and spanned more than 60 years of outstanding service to the club.

Starting in the juniors, Garry won the 1964 Colts Batting Trophy before progressing through the grades and becoming a permanent Division 1 player in 1974/75. Player #123 went on to play 301 Division 1 games across 22 seasons and was part of three Division 1 premierships in 1976/77, 1978/79 and 1979/80.

Garry also won the 1977/78 Outstanding Fielding Trophy and the 1980/81 Most Valuable Player Trophy, while later adding two Division 2 premierships and three Division 6 premierships to an incredible playing career.

Off the field, Garry coached multiple sides, including the 1995/96 Division 2 premiership team, served on the Management Committee, and remained a loyal and valued member of the club throughout his life.

Garry will be sadly missed by all at Glenelg Baseball Club, who offer our sincere condolences to Garry’s family.
