Scoreboards tell facts but they don't always tell the truth. While the records will show that MHSOB defeated OEM in the Grand Final, the greater truth is that OEM was winning all along. It would have been easy for a small club like OEM to have been entirely defeated by the circumstances of the last three years, certainly, more grandiose institutions have been. But instead, often from our humble open-air clubhouse, we joined together week after week to compete on the hockey field. While the post-game aches are less noticeable when we score more goals, the simple reality is we win every time we join together to play, to tackle, to score, to drink and to laugh. We win every time we play down the left/right and score on the right/left. We win every time a parent passes to their child. No doubt there is a sting in defeat that these lofty realisations don't entirely sooth, but there is no shame in this loss. There's no shame in clearly earning the right to play the definitive game and be beaten by a well trained side and a small number of key moments. The season ends with OEM recording 20 wins, 1 draw and 5 loses. OEM are the proud runners-up of Metro 2 Central 2022. Old East Malvern Hockey Club, Constantia.
