Clinton Football CLUB

Clinton Football CLUB HISTORYThe history of Clinton Soccer Club (now Clinton Football Club) is one of Gladstone’s sporting success stories that started almost forty years ago.

In March 1971 a group of soccer supporters met in the Town Hall for the purpose of forming a new club. By the time they walked out, Clinton Park Soccer Club was born. The word ‘Park’ was later deleted. By 1973 the new club was struggling and looked in danger of folding partly due to inaugural president, George Coffin, leaving town.Fortunately two newcomers came to Gladstone that year, Bill Wyper a

nd Ted Coyle, who were ex-players and devotees of the game and helped put Clinton Club back on track. Bill Wyper was soon coaching the club’s young senior side which proved to be a very competitive outfit. With the senior team going well, officials then set out to establish junior soccer. In 1973 a successful sign-on was held at the South Gladstone School which was the junior training venue for many years. Fixtures were played at the Showgrounds but in 1974 moved to Blain Park which was the home for junior soccer for the next twenty years. It was soon obvious that junior soccer was Gladstone’s growth sport and Clinton was a very popular club. Numbers mushroomed and in 1975 a separate junior committee was set up. Clinton Club now had a Senior Section and a Junior Section with each responsible for its own administration and finances. An overall committee dealt with matters that affected the club as a whole. In 1975, Clinton juniors grew from 5 to 14 teams - from U6 to U16. Club officials were rapt and forecast a bright future for Clinton due to its strong junior base.In 1977 Clinton officials began to search for a home ground. Graham Ferguson, an earthmoving contractor, offered to lease a section of his land in Harvey Road, free of charge, for Clinton to develop as club grounds. Graham generously donated time and equipment to clear the area. Officials, supporters and parents quickly got behind the project. Old buildings were obtained and modified into toilets, showers and store areas. The ground was cleared, top dressed and grassed, electricity was connected, training lights set up and tanks erected to provide a water supply. The grounds were used for training but it wasn’t until 1985 that the field was considered good enough to play the first fixtures. The last games were played there in 1987.It was a devastating blow to the club when the Council advised that a new road would cut through the field and further development and spending should cease. Clinton then had to look for another home and after considering a few options it was decided to apply to join the Clinton Park Sports Association. The application was successful and Clinton Soccer Club became an affiliated member in 1986 along with Gladstone Cricket Association and Mudcrab Aussie Rules. Clinton Club members worked on the clubhouse and later played a major role in setting up an underground sprinkler system and erecting field lighting so night games could be played. Soccer matches were first played at the new grounds in 1988. Players and supporters soon settled into their new home at the CPSA complex and appreciated the improved facilities.During this time, the juniors flourished and a ladies team was reformed in 1988 after a rather lengthy break. The Clinton seniors had made the step up in 1983 and had entered the newly formed regional competition, CQ League. Clinton entered this tough competition most years that it operated, many times as Gladstone’s only representative. The boys in green struggled at times but were always competitive and narrowly missed out on making the top four on a few occasions. The CQ League was renamed Midstate League in 2000 and it was this year that Clinton finally made it to the top four and a place in the final series. But that was as close as they could get and the news wasn’t any better in 2002 when again a place in the top four gave some hope but no joy on the scoreboard. Midstate League became Capricornia League in 2004. In 2005, two divisions in Cap League were introduced and there was a bit to celebrate that year. The 1st division won the consolation grand final on penalties and the 2nd division won the minor premiership but was edged out in the final series. The following year, history was made when Clinton’s top team won the Cap League minor premiership with Coach Gary Larsen at the helm. The club’s CSL 1st division team didn’t make the top four in 2007. The 2nd division won through to the grand final but were beaten by Bluebirds in Yeppoon in their most important game of the season. In 2008, Clinton 1st division showed their strength under Coach Derek Horton and won the minor premiership before going on to win their way to the grand final. Once again the Wesley Hall Cup slipped through their fingers as Southside edged them out in Rockhampton on grand final night. But finally in 2009, Clinton was not going to be denied any longer and it was a determined and focused team that took to Marley Brown Oval against Bluebirds in the Cap League grand final. The scoreboard said it all: Clinton 7 Bluebirds 1. After 26 years, Clinton would finally get its name on the prestigious and coveted Wesley Hall Trophy. Horton, also lead the team to Minor Premierships in 2010, 2011 & 2012. In 2012 the team once again showed its dominance and defeated Nerimbera 7 -1 in the Grand final. There is no doubt that Clinton is a fortunate club. Apart from the CQ Premier League team’s strong performances, the teams competing in the local competition (1st, 2nd division & ladies) have also notched up many victories over the years. This, plus an impressive junior line-up allows club officials and supporters to look to the future with confidence as Clinton Football Club continues to play an active role in promoting the game in the Gladstone area.

Clinton Player of the Match: Billy Noonan

Clinton had their shooting boots on target this week, finishing clinically and scoring some excellent goals in a convincing win. The Noonan brothers led the way in attack, combining for eight goals between them.

Travelling with just 12 players and forced to use their only substitute in the first half due to injury, the side produced an excellent team performance and deserved the win.

Fielding a consistent team has been a challenge in recent weeks due to various commitments, and that is likely to continue over the next few rounds. However, the players who have stepped into the side have done a fantastic job and will continue to make a valuable contribution.

Clinton Player of the Match: Entire team

The Premier Ladies could count themselves a little unlucky not to come away with at least a point from their match against Central this round.

A late goal to Central proved the difference, handing them the win. All of our girls played well and carried out their roles admirably, creating opportunities throughout the match but unfortunately were unable to find the finishing touch.

The girls will now focus on Saturday’s match when they take on BITS at Clinton's Pink Day.

Dan Jackson (3)

Clinton Player of the Match: Andrew Fritz

The local Div. 1 boys produced a strong performance against Central, making the perfect start with two quick goals from Dan Jackson to put the team firmly in control.

The boys eased off the pressure slightly during the final 15 minutes of the first half, allowing Central more possession, but some solid defensive work ensured they remained scoreless.

The second half began much like the first, with everyone working hard and creating opportunities. Liam Phillips added a goal, while Dan Jackson completed his hat-trick for a 4–0 win.

Was hard to single anybody out as it was a good all round team effort but Player of the Match went to Pumba for his tireless effort in the middle of the park. A big thank you to the players that helped out with there being a few regulars unavailable.

Clinton Player of the Match: Steve Comber

Special Mentions: Jakeb Sanders, Will Draper, Kurt Koivunen and Referee Mitch Sutherland

This week the Div. 2 Men took on a travelling Bilo side and with a referee shortage young Mitch Sutherland opted to sit out and use his refereeing skills to ensure Valleys didn't have to travel all the way for nothing so a massive thank you to Mitch for doing so and the game could go ahead.

In the game the Phats pressured and chased down everything causing havoc up top early. Jakeb Sanders chased down a back pass which caused the keeper to panic and Jakeb’s presence was more than enough to cause pressure, block the clearance which ricocheted off him straight into the net.

A great move coming in from the left hand side saw Will Draper in space and he shot the ball into the top right corner for a 2-0 lead. The Phats then lost some concentration and conceded two goals to lock it up at 2-2.

The phat came back out after the break and took a 3-2 lead when young Chad whipped a corner in and a towering Ryan Grayson headed it into the net. Shortly after another corner the Bilo keeper made a great save stopping Grayso from scoring his second. Clinton kept piling on the pressure and a high flying Kurt Kiovunen broke through the back line placing the ball into the bottom left beautifully from 20 yards out.

Late in the game a graceful Chris Pooley was left unmarked in the box to tap Clinton’s fifth home after a beautiful run and cross from Will Draper to finish up the 5-2 win for the Phats to get them back on their winning way.

Clinton Goal Scorers:

Nate Gourley

Clinton Player of the Match: Dylan Wilshaw
Special Mentions: Kane Blomfield & Dylan Veach

The Premier U18’s played Nerimbera in Rocky this round, and had previously had a win and a loss against them this season. A really strong start had Clinton 1-0 up about ten minutes in with Dylan Wilshaw finishing well from close range after a nice pass through from Will Barker. The young Grubs continued to create chances but couldn’t add to the scoreline despite controlling the game and went into halftime ahead 1-0. The magpies scored a penalty at the start of the second half to lock the game at 1-1, with Nerimbera then having a player sent off not long after the goal. Clinton took advantage of the extra man and took the lead back with Nate Gourley scoring to get it to 2-1, and Dylan Wilshaw added another goal to his tally with a late goal to seal a 3-1 win.

Clinton Goal Scorers:

Archie Doherty
Mason Mansfield

Clinton Players of the Match: Flynn Hall & Lachie Stoneley

The FQPL U15 side played their “home” game at BNP against Cap Coast and came away with a 2-1 victory despite never really being under pressure for the entire game.

The team created multiple chances and should have been several goals up early but it took a dot shot from a foul on striker Josh Heit by the Coast keeper following a fantastic pass from Lachie Stoneley, that led to the opening goal by Archie Doherty.

The Coast side continue to employ a deep block that frustrated the Greens but was broken down by some slick passing within the box that created an opportunity that Mason Mansfield took calmly from the top of the box.

The game was brought to life by a counterattack goal to Cap Coast with 10 to play. The side rallied and hung on for a 2-1 win, that on any other day could have been a more convincing result.

Clinton Goal Scorers:

Jayden Jasinski (2)
Isaiah Noonan

Clinton Player of the Match: Kurt Taylor

It was the top-of-the-table clash with Clinton’s Premier U13 taking on the current FQPL champion heavyweights Capricorn Coast. It was a relaxed build-up throughout the week with Clinton maintaining their focus on the principals being instilled from coaching. There honestly wasn’t much talk about the Cap Coast team. Cap Coast had gone the season with a 100% winning record so far for 2026 so it was set to be a thrilling game.

In the first half the Clinton boys really left off from their last game, playing possession-based and expansive football. The boys were terrific in their positioning and rotations, really embracing the relationist way they have been training. The boys really grew into the game organically with the different principals given to them in and within the different main moments. Jayden Jasinski once again got the team ahead with a 1v1 with the Cap Coast keeper.

Clinton were in control the first half and often resembled the swashbuckling Keegan’s 90s heroes. Special mention to Tolu Kaka. His runs from deep changed the game for Clinton. The boys kept the ball and looked to pe*****te. Their defensive shape was sublime and tucked into an effective mid-block which made Cap Coast play around the defensive shell. It was a thrilling half. An absolute delight to watch Clinton play.

The boys changed their base shape slightly in the second half and Eamonn Townsend was particularly impressive tactically throughout the half playing as a winger. His tracking when in defensive transition was outstanding. Eammon was a real stand-out using good cover-shadow when defending. Darcy Williams played very well as a false 9. He was attributed with a remarkable assist for the team’s second as he slotted in Jayden once again to make the game 2-0. Darcy’s composure in the final third was second-to-none.

The boys eventually put the game to bed with a set-piece routine. The boys have spoken about changing some of their routines and it was great to see some unconventional thinking rewarded. It was a remarkable in-swinging ball from Darcy that put Isaiah Noonan in on a goal with a perfectly timed run to meet the goal with a magnificent header. This put the game to bed. Despite a late consolation goal from Cap Coast, the boys felt they controlled the game. Jackson Boyle was simply terrific with his communication with Kurt Taylor. They really commandeered the middle of the pitch with authority and fluidity.

It really is only the start of the 2026 FQPL roller-coaster ride. Clinton’s U13’s have already had their ups-and-downs but it’s only up from here. Full Hearts, Clinton forever. Player of the Match was Kurt Taylor for his commanding display.

📸 Well done to the Local Division 1 Men for keeping a clean sheet this round.
The defence worked hard all game, but goalkeeper Caden made a couple of top saves when called upon to keep Central scoreless. Well done team.
