Gisborne & Romsey Sh*to Ryu Karate Karate is an indigenous martial art of Japan. With the literal meaning of 'Empty Hand'. She also has a 4th Dan in Okinawan Kobudo (Weapons - Bo, Sai, etc.)

About Us:
Gisborne is a family friendly Karate school (Dojo) for students of all ages and skill levels. We train in the gym at the New Gisborne Primary School, just off Ferrier Road, New Gisborne. About the Instructors:
Sensei Marlene (5th Dan) has been training in Sh*to Ryu Karate for over 20 years and has been teaching for much of that time in Gisborne. Sensei Robbie - bio to come. About the Sty

le:
Sh*to-ryu was founded by Kenwa Mabuni (1889-1952) in 1928 and was influenced directly by both Naha-te and Shuri-te. The name Sh*to is constructively derived from the combination of the Japanese characters of Mabuni's teachers' names - Ankoh Itosu and Kanryo Higaonna. Sh*to-ryu schools use a large number of kata, about fifty, and is characterized by an emphasis on power in the execution of techniques.
