✨ Connection Before Completion ✨
Alyssa, one of our working students, spending some time with Robbie (3.5yo Warmblood) this week as part of his ongoing foundation education. 🐴
One of the things I often remind people is that with young horses, especially those that are naturally busy in their minds, the goal isn’t necessarily to get more done—it’s to help them become more present, connected and comfortable in themselves.
Robbie is a lovely young horse, but like many intelligent, sensitive youngsters, he can be easily drawn into what’s happening around him. The real work for him isn’t learning how to move faster or perform more exercises; it’s learning how to slow down, focus, regulate his emotions and stay connected with the person beside him.
To some observers, this work can look uneventful. It can appear slow. But often the most important progress happens in those quiet moments when a horse chooses connection over distraction, softness over tension, and curiosity over reactivity. 🌱
Before we worry about collection, transitions, jumping or any of the things that may come later, we want a horse that feels safe in its own body, understands how to process information, and can respond thoughtfully and softly to simple questions.
For a horse of Robbie’s age, that’s a far more valuable investment than rushing toward milestones. Taking the time it takes now creates a stronger, safer and more confident horse in the future. 💙
The foundation we’re building today becomes the horse we ride tomorrow.
Alyssa has done a lovely job of meeting Robbie where he’s at and prioritising connection over completion. For a young horse like this, that’s exactly what he needs. 👏
