Each year I ride and train my own horses with world renowned horsemen and women and learn from other professionals to continuously build on my knowledge, skills and awareness. Always searching for better and kinder ways to train, ride and manage my horses, I have gone in search across the world to find trainers, clinicians and practitioners who resonate and teach horsemanship that puts the horse’s welfare first and foremost and builds on the deep connection, trust, softness and feel that represents true mastery in horsemanship. AMT Equestrian’s focus is on working with horses in a holistic way that benefits the horses’ biomechanics and way of motion to build soundness as well as mental, behavioural and emotional well being.

✨ Connection Before Completion ✨

Alyssa, one of our working students, spending some time with Robbie (3.5yo Warmblood) this week as part of his ongoing foundation education. 🐴

One of the things I often remind people is that with young horses, especially those that are naturally busy in their minds, the goal isn’t necessarily to get more done—it’s to help them become more present, connected and comfortable in themselves.

Robbie is a lovely young horse, but like many intelligent, sensitive youngsters, he can be easily drawn into what’s happening around him. The real work for him isn’t learning how to move faster or perform more exercises; it’s learning how to slow down, focus, regulate his emotions and stay connected with the person beside him.

To some observers, this work can look uneventful. It can appear slow. But often the most important progress happens in those quiet moments when a horse chooses connection over distraction, softness over tension, and curiosity over reactivity. 🌱

Before we worry about collection, transitions, jumping or any of the things that may come later, we want a horse that feels safe in its own body, understands how to process information, and can respond thoughtfully and softly to simple questions.

For a horse of Robbie’s age, that’s a far more valuable investment than rushing toward milestones. Taking the time it takes now creates a stronger, safer and more confident horse in the future. 💙

The foundation we’re building today becomes the horse we ride tomorrow.

Alyssa has done a lovely job of meeting Robbie where he’s at and prioritising connection over completion. For a young horse like this, that’s exactly what he needs. 👏

Progress Isn't Always Pretty

Sometimes progress looks like a breakthrough.

Sometimes it looks like going back to basics.

The trouble is, most people only celebrate the first one.

The horses don't care how quickly you get there. They care that you make sense along the way.

What's something simple you've been working on recently?

Be honest...

How many times have you gone to the paddock for one horse and ended up spending an hour with all of them?

No riding.
No training.
No plan.

Just standing around talking to horses.

We know we're not the only ones.

Your horse doesn't know it's a competition horse.

It doesn't know today's lesson is important.

It doesn't know you've entered an event next month.

All it knows is how it feels right now.

The best training sessions often start by putting our own agenda aside and paying attention to what the horse is telling us.

What was it your horse was trying to tell you today?

Are You Coming? 👀

Our next two-day clinic is happening 20th & 21st June, and rider spots are already filling.

Designed to build clarity, connection and confidence between horse and rider, we'll cover groundwork, ridden exercises, rider feel, balance, softness and communication in a supportive, small-group environment.

✔ Groups of just 4-6 riders
✔ Individual feedback throughout the weekend
✔ Suitable for beginners through to advanced riders

If you've been meaning to come along, don't leave it too late. These clinics have a habit of filling faster than expected, and once the spots are gone, you'll be waiting for the next one.

🔷Training Tip:

Teaching a young horse to lift and accept having their feet picked up is crucial for their safety and handling, especially before they require a farrier or trimmer. This early training helps the horse become comfortable with having their legs and hooves handled, reducing stress and resistance during farrier visits. It also promotes trust between the horse and handler, preventing potential injuries to both parties.

A well-mannered horse that calmly lifts its feet will make farrier work smoother, ensuring proper hoof care from a young age, which is essential for long-term soundness and hoof health

People talk about relaxing the horse, but it starts with us. When I let go of tension shoulders, breath, mind the horse follows. They mirror who we are more than what we do.
