A different kind of post from me— not just as a horse rider, but as a teacher and coach 👩‍🏫

Yesterday at our School PD, we had the absolute privilege of hearing from an incredibly inspirational keynote speaker, Dr Craig Challen.

Craig was one of the Australian cave divers who flew to Thailand during the emergency rescue of the 13 young soccer players including their assistant coach trapped in the flooded Tham Luang cave. Hearing him tell the story of that incredible, nerve-racking experience was fascinating — but what made it even more special was discovering that Craig is a vet, grew up right here in our lovely little corner of Gidgegannup, and attended Eastern Hills Senior High School!

He spoke about the years of education, experience, adventure and resilience that ultimately led him to being in a position to play a part in such an extraordinary rescue.

But my biggest takeaway from his presentation was his final message: take risks!

Risks can be scary. Sometimes the outcome is a huge relief. Sometimes you look back and wonder why you were ever so nervous. And sometimes… you learn the hard way.

But whether it’s a student having a go at a test they aren’t feeling confident about or a piece of work/activity, a rider stepping up to a more challenging line in the jumping phases, or simply getting out of the start box — growth only happens when we are willing to step outside what feels comfortable.

Without challenge, there is no learning.
Without risk, there is no achievement.
And without occasionally getting things wrong, there is no resilience.

As a teacher and a coach, I think this is such an important reminder. Our job isn’t always to make things easy or remove the nerves. Sometimes it’s to help people feel confident enough to take the risk, support them when it doesn’t go perfectly, and celebrate them for having a go in the first place.

And perhaps that’s one of the biggest lessons horses teach us too. 🐴

Slightly obsessed with my young mare Penelope (Barrabadeen Aspire x Future Prophecy)!
First real jump today and she took to it like a duck to water 🦆
With genetics like hers it’s in her blood to jump but you never really know until you give it a go! We are having soo much fun!

Looking forward to her starting her competition career next year 🥰

A real *pinch me* moment... 🩵🩷

Sandros Salute MW and I are incredibly proud to have been long-listed for the 2026 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany.

We certainly haven't made it here alone. A huge thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey.

To my family and friends, especially my parents, Shaun Roderick, Kate Ingham (for all the kilometres spent driving my pony and me around the east coast this year!) and the Lyall family —thank you for your endless support.

To my coaches, Stuart and the whole Tinney Eventing family, Ricky MacMillan and David Dobson Equestrian, thank you all your help! And to Sandros' amazing vet, physio and farrier team—Warwick Vale, Evita Busschers, Maddy Georgiades, and Gavin Kessey—thank you for keeping him happy, healthy and ready to perform.

Finally, thank you to my incredible sponsors for supporting our journey:

A little Melbourne 3DE flashback… 💙

Looking back at this moment I’m reminded just how special our partnership is.

Years of hard work, trust, and countless miles together have built a bond that means more to me than I could ever put into words. He’s been my teammate through the highs and the lows, always giving me everything he has, and it will always be a privilege to walk beside a horse like him.

Here’s to many more memories together, my incredible horse. ❤️🐴

Super excited for what is next with Sandros!
This sand dancing stuff is actually quite fun 🥰

He is super happy to be home and out in his big paddock after travelling home very well with Isabella Day .
He will have a couple of weeks rest now before coming back into work to help with the baby’s first outings and trail rides. My goal for the second half of 2026 with Sandros is to learn and play with some higher level dressage tests while I have such an educated lovely horse, and I’m sure we will fit showjumping in there!

Wow what a week! And 2 months!

Whilst it wasn’t the ending we were hoping for there is so many positives to take home with our podium finish at Melbourne 4* L 🥉

Firstly I just have the most incredible horse that tries his heart out and who I’m so grateful for 💙💙💙 I am very excited to finally have him on his way home!

Our dressage was a PB and without our little additional tempi change and canter step I think we have our sites set on a sub 30!

Cross country; well he is just a machine who always wants to jump through the flags, and that massive gallop stride of his is there to make time!

Showjumping, I know we will get our clear rounds back that he is capable of and we have plans going forward to get back there. Monday wasn’t our day but it’s moments like that build resilience and drive. As hard as it is and disappointing at the time to have those rails, I try to remind myself what an achievement 3rd place is and what 12 year old me would say if I told her I got a profound finish at one of the biggest events in Aus.

This trip was a huge team effort. The biggest thank you goes to .eventing and team Tinney, and .ingham.chicken.love.em ! Between Adelaide and Melbourne I had to return work and leave Fluffy with Kate and the Tinney’s. I couldn’t say thank you enough for the care and time they put into Fluffy!! Also all of the support from Stuart at Melbourne was invaluable!

Well done to the whole of team WA at the event, our team effort and support of each other is second to none!

Thank you also to .eventing_08 for being a fantastic groom at Melbourne plus my incredible cool down teams post cross country Bev Ingham

Next steps; get my boy home and give him a good break before going and playing with some higher level dressage tests and probably go and do some showjumping.

Huge thank you to my sponsors for all their support
