THE GREAT SCRIBE ⭐️

“For more than five decades, Russell has travelled the globe with one purpose, to tell the story of water polo.”

An absolutely phenomenal write up about Russell McKinnon, a passionate and entertaining water polo personality.

We are extremely fortunate to have had his expertise and knowledge shared around our pool previous seasons, and are forever grateful.

Take the time to read the article posted by Academy Waterpolo, as it is truly inspiring. Thank you Macca, for bringing it to our attention so we could continue to share the word about Russell ♥️

THE GREAT SCRIBE.

The Man Who Witnessed the World of Water Polo

There are great players. There are great coaches. There are great referees.

Then there are the people who dedicate an entire lifetime to preserving the history of the sport.

Russell McKinnon belongs in that rare category.

For more than five decades, Russell has travelled the globe with one purpose, to tell the story of water polo.

From his first international assignment at the 1974 European Championships in Vienna to the modern era of World Aquatics competitions, his career has become one of the most extraordinary journeys ever undertaken by a journalist in our sport.

His passport tells the story of a lifetime.

Olympic Games in Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, Beijing and London. World Championships across Perth, Fukuoka, Barcelona, Melbourne, Rome, Shanghai, Budapest, Kazan, Gwangju and beyond. World Cups, World Leagues, Junior World Championships, Commonwealth Championships, Universiades, Asian Games, Olympic qualification tournaments and countless international tours.

Very few people on Earth have witnessed so much elite water polo with their own eyes.

Russell has covered competitions across more than 40 countries, reporting from iconic aquatic venues in Australia, Europe, Asia and the Americas. His career has taken him from Perth to Budapest, Sydney to Shanghai, Barcelona to Beijing, Athens to Gwangju, documenting the triumphs, heartbreaks and defining moments of generations of athletes.

He has watched legends emerge, dynasties rise and fall, and Olympic dreams become reality.

Yet statistics alone cannot define his legacy.

Thousands upon thousands of matches have passed before him.

Every article, every report and every carefully recorded result has become another page in water polo’s history. His work has ensured that performances were remembered long after the final whistle, giving athletes, coaches and officials the recognition they deserved.

Russell has witnessed the evolution of the sport itself, from a game played in a very different era to the fast, tactical and globally connected spectacle we know today.

He has seen rule changes reshape matches, technology revolutionise officiating, and the women’s game grow into one of the world’s premier sporting competitions.

While players eventually retire and coaches move on, Russell simply kept travelling.

Behind every accreditation hangs a story. Behind every flight was another championship waiting to be documented. Behind every notebook was a passion for ensuring water polo’s greatest moments were never forgotten.

People often say that sport is built by those inside the pool.

In truth, it is also built by those standing quietly on the pool deck, in the media tribune or behind a keyboard, preserving its history for future generations.

Russell McKinnon has done exactly that for over 50 years.

His contribution cannot be measured simply by the number of events attended or the countries visited. It is measured by the generations of water polo people whose stories he has helped tell, the history he has preserved, and the legacy he leaves behind for everyone who loves the game.

Water polo owes a great debt to Russell McKinnon.

He has not simply covered the sport.

He has chronicled its history.
