This is quite a common occurrence and I have definitely seen bits placed in the horses mouth incorrectly

Are you putting your horse’s bit on the right way round? 🤔 With so many bit styles now available, it's easier than ever to find the right fit for your horse—but also easier to get bit orientation wrong. In this article by bitting specialist Fiona Dearing from Bit Right - Equine Bit Fitting, we learn just how common it is to see bits fitted upside down or back to front—even in horses regularly ridden, out competing, or attending Pony Club!

Incorrect bit placement can cause anything from mild discomfort to serious safety risks. Fiona explains how to spot directional markers on popular brands like Bombers Bits Australia, Neue Schule Ltd, and TRUST EQUESTRIAN—and offers a free guide to help you get it right every time.

It's practical, non-judgemental advice every rider should read.

Something to ponder!

BOMBERS PHILOSOPHY

"PRESSURE = RESISTANCE"
"RESISTANCE = LACK OF CONTROL"

-Bomber Nell-

A horse is an animal of flight – it will never yield to pressure or pain, it will either move away from it or run away. To obtain control we need to remove the resistance. To remove the resistance, one must remove the pressure or distribute the pressure over a larger surface area.

What a great way to start the eventing season for 2026 with an incredible 4th Place …out of 31 riders for my sponsored rider, Ashlee and her amazing horse, Jorji!!
They competed at the Capel Pony Club CCI-s 2026 EVA 80 Junior coming in double clear for both their showjumping and cross country and a very impressive 31.4 on their dressage 👌🙌🤩

Looking forward for the rest of the season for Ashlee and Jorji
Good luck team!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

As the riding season approaches I would like to address horses mouths in particular dentals and why it is an important part for Bit Fitting.

Bit fitting a horse can be very rewarding....
However there are a few “Boxes” that need to be “Ticked” before a consult.

One of them is your horses teeth.... so much can go on in their mouths without us knowing!

It’s really important before a bit fit that your horses dentals are up to date.
Usually every 6 months for horses 5 & under
Then yearly there after, unless problems.

I’ve was super lucky to spend part of my training with Dr Sarah Sly from Coastal Equine Vets, getting up close & personal with horses mouth while she does her dentals.

Sarah has very generously offered my clients a 10 % discount on any dental work or dental exams.

If your would like to book a Bit Consult but think your horses teeth may need attention please contact
coastalequinevet to make an appointment.

Historically thicker bits were considered to be 'kind' to a horses mouth. We now know better.
Most horses simply don't have the space in their mouths to accommodate a thick bit leading to discomfort and a lack of communication.
This information was the best we had at the time but again, we now know more so we can do better.

Some good advice!!!
Taking bookings now for the 2025 season
Can travel outside of Geraldton

Did you know that the size and fit of your bit can greatly impact your horse’s comfort and performance? Here’s why:
🔹 A bit that’s too large can move side to side, causing cuts, sores, or even damage to the lips and mouth. It also won’t work effectively, making it harder to deliver clear aids.
🔹 A bit that’s too small can pinch or squeeze your horse’s face, leading to discomfort and potential injury.

Don't forget that you can always reach out to us with any questions, or book a Bit Fitting with one of our accredited bit fitters if you need further help.

Getting the right fit is essential for your horse’s well-being and communication in the saddle. ➡️ www.bitbankaustralia.com.au/bit-fit-and-sizing/
