Last night was a historic night for Prevail Jiu Jitsu.

We awarded our first ever black belt.

And we could not be prouder that it was Mel.

Mel has been with us from the start. She has grown with the club, helped shape the room, and has become a huge part of what Prevail is today.

On the mats, she is truly a force to be reckoned with. Tough, technical, relentless and composed under pressure.

But the belt is about more than that.

What many people do not always see are the quiet acts of service and kindness. The way Mel looks after people. The way she supports the room. The way she gives her time, her care, her energy and her loyalty without needing recognition for it.

That is black belt.

Not just skill.
Not just toughness.
Not just years on the mats.

Character.

Mel is part of the soul of our community, and tonight we had the honour of recognising that.

We also had the privilege of awarding John “Reddog” his purple belt.

Reddog is one of those people every good club needs. Steady, loyal, hard-working and always willing to help the team around him. His purple belt is well earned, and it reflects not only his growth on the mats, but the way he continues to show up for Prevail and the people in the room.

Social Sunday at Prevail

This Sunday, 31 May.

4:00 pm - Rolls
5:15 pm - Catch-up, food and a laugh

Come in for a roll, hang around afterwards, share some food, and spend a bit of time with the crew off the mats.

Nothing complicated. Just good people, good training, and a reminder that Prevail is more than just the rounds we do.

The VJJC2026 Championships. A final thought. These are the moments that matter.

AFBJJ captured a few photos of our team in the huddles across the weekend, and honestly, they say more than any medal table could.

This is what community looks like.

Not just people wearing the same shirt.
Not just people from the same club.
People standing together when the nerves are high, the doubts are loud, and the fear starts creeping in.

Because every competitor knows that moment.

The moment before your name gets called.
The moment you wonder if you have done enough.
The moment your mind starts asking questions you do not really want to answer.

That is where team matters.

Someone puts a hand on your shoulder.
Someone reminds you to breathe.
Someone tells you they believe in you until you can believe it for yourself.

That is what we are trying to build at Prevail.

A place where people can test themselves, but not feel alone in it.
A place where courage is built under pressure.
A place where winning matters, but integrity matters more.
A place where leadership means taking care of the people around you.

To everyone who competed, coached, warmed people up, checked in, stayed late, cheered, encouraged, carried bags, gave hugs, shared nerves, and helped keep the crew together - thank you.

This weekend was another reminder that Jiu Jitsu gives us more than techniques and results. It gives us a community that helps us face our fears, quiet our doubts, and step forward anyway.

We are excited to introduce Rangers - our new Prevail Youth Jiu Jitsu Program for kids aged 9 to 14.

Held on Tuesday nights at 5:15pm, Rangers is designed to give young people the chance to learn practical Jiu Jitsu in a fun, safe and supportive environment.

More than just technique, we want to help kids build real confidence, resilience and self-belief. To learn how to stay calm under pressure, stand firm, and stand up for themselves when it matters.

Confidence. Capability. Character.

Places will be strictly limited so we can keep the class focused, personal and high quality.

Day one of the Victorian Championships.

Nerves. Energy. Tension. Disappointment. Elation.
All the things that make competition what it is.

From a coach’s point of view, today was everything you hope to see. Not just medals, though there were plenty of those, but courage. Composure. Grit. Teammates showing up for one another. Competitors stepping into hard moments, testing themselves, learning, adjusting, and carrying themselves with real pride.

Every Prevail competitor did so well today. Some had the day they dreamed of. Some felt the sting that only competition can bring. Both matter. Both shape you. Both are part of becoming better.

At the end of day one, Prevail sits at:

5 bronze

An outstanding result, but more than that, an outstanding reflection of the work, heart, and character this crew has put in.

Why you feel nervous before competing — and why that’s not a bad thing…

Before a comp match, most people feel it.

The shaky hands.
The tight chest.
The racing heart.
The dry mouth.
The weird feeling in your stomach.
The little voice in your head asking, “What if I’m not ready?”

A lot of athletes interpret that feeling as fear, weakness, or a sign that something is wrong.

But most of the time, it’s not.

It’s your body getting ready to perform.

When your brain recognises that something matters, it switches on your stress response. Your sympathetic nervous system kicks in. Your body releases adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol. Your heart rate increases. Blood gets pushed toward the big muscles. Your body starts preparing you to move, react, grip, scramble, defend, attack, and survive the moment.

That’s why you shake.

Your body is switched on, but you’re still standing still.

That’s why you feel sick.

Blood is being moved away from digestion and toward action.

That’s why your mind starts racing.

Your brain is trying to scan the situation, predict danger, and prepare you for what might happen.

This is not always a sign that you’re falling apart.

It can be a sign that your body understands the moment.

The trap is when we start judging the feeling.

“I’m nervous, so I must not be ready.”

“I’m shaking, so I must be weak.”

“I feel sick, so something is wrong.”

That second layer of panic is often worse than the original nerves.

The goal is not to feel nothing.

The goal is to recognise what is happening, accept it, and use it.

Before a match, your body might feel like it’s redlining in neutral. The engine is running hard, but the clutch hasn’t dropped yet. Once the match starts, that energy has somewhere to go. The nerves often disappear because your brain has a job to do. You move from waiting and worrying into action and problem solving.

That is why warm-ups matter.

That is why breathing matters.

That is why having a simple first task matters.

Breathe. Move. Get your grips. Find your posture. Win the first exchange. Stay present.

You don’t need to be perfectly calm to compete well.

You need to be prepared.

There’s a difference.

I want our competitors to understand this because nerves are part of the process. They don’t mean you don’t belong there. They don’t mean you’re not tough enough. They don’t mean you’re not ready.

They mean your body is awake.

They mean you care.

They mean the moment matters.

The skill is learning not to fight your own biology.

Notice it. Name it. Breathe through it. Then step on the mat and put that energy to work.

And if you don’t feel confident yet, that’s okay.

Borrow some of mine until you build your own.
