Community Tango in Geelong

Community Tango in Geelong Community Tango in Geelong presents Argentine Tango classes, practicas, milongas and special events in the local community of Geelong.

Community Tango in Geelong was launched in November 2009 at a Beautiful Afternoon Tango Tea that, with generous sponsorship from Tango Friends Australia Inc, raised over $1,000 for charity. Christ Church in Geelong was chosen as the venue because the parish hall is a community centre that has provided people in need with free, nourishing meals, daily, for more than 20 years. It is the perfect plac

e to bring together a different kind of tango community – an open and supportive circle that welcomes newcomers, provides a viable alternative form of healthy, affordable exercise, entertainment and social activity in Geelong, and gives people of all ages and backgrounds an opportunity to come together to enjoy tango. Southern Cross Tango stepped in to help, taking on this new group as a community outreach arm. Pam & Richard Jarvis, long standing supporters of tango in Melbourne and Adelaide, now resident in Geelong, run the Community Tango in Geelong classes practicas & special events.

We like to keep things fresh & exciting with our tango activities n Geelong. Doing different things is good for us all - for our bodies, brains, spirits. And we like to support local businesses in our community too. More shots from our Feast night at Theo's.

Another great social night - and a different one - with our dancers. We enjoyed a sumptuous feast of delicious foods & Lebanese hospitality at Theo's in Pakington Street, Newtown, and we danced tango after dinner. A timely reminder of how cultural strains can weave together to create beautiful and meaningful shared experiences. Tango was born around 1880 - that makes it an old dance by modern standards. At our Winter Milonga in Geelong, The Thursday Girls presented a floorshow that paid tribute Edith Piaf and Paris, the tradition of clowning, and, of course, the tango. The dancers really did 'bring on the clowns'.... for a lovely show that surprised & entertained the audience, and reminded everyone that dancing can be creative and fun.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making our Winter Milonga in Geelong such a joyful, fun & successful event. Great to again welcome members of Christ Church congregation to our tango circle. We were delighted our dancers were able to organise a special effort for the Milonga that raised $1,376 to support the Community Meals Program and its tireless team of workers, headed by Jan McGowan & Ruth Christian. Nice to see that tango can make a difference.
