//// Sculler’s Head of the Barwon ////

What a fantastic day we enjoyed to wrap up the Rowing Geelong Winter Series. Still and cloudless but with a little fog for atmosphere! Just more evidence that God (or whoever is in charge up there) rows on the Barwon!

70 scullers enjoyed a gentile paddle down one of the more scenic stretches of river to be found in this fine country. Well, gentile for some but pretty willing for others. Our major prize winners are decided by Prognostics (explained below) and those awards went to:

Don Bridges Platter for Best Boats Champion: Peter Antonie
Don Bridges Platter for Tub Boats Champion: Elizbeth Tesarch.

Fantastic performance from our two champions but let’s also rejoice in the other category winners.

Division Boys Girls
Open Ned Joyce Issy Batrouney
Junior Zander Bailey Rio Smith
School James Trott Emma Stevenson
Master Younger Shane O'Connor-Smith Lacinta Rodriquez
Master Middle Peter Antony Christine Camiller
Master Older Jeff Rees Wendy Cotter

Our fastest time of the day, and Senior men’s champion was Ned Joyce with a smoking 17:58. Our fastest lady was Maggie Foley at 19:53, though she races as Senior A so could not quite match Issy’s prognostic as a Senior B.

Special thanks to our volunteers who helped deliver a safe and enjoyable event: Neil Fletcher, Monika Johnson, Ian Farren, Rob Heath, Sandy Locke, Ross Boyd, John Filippou, Alan Chalmers, Paul van Prooyen, Anna Murray and Brian Digby. Special Thanks to the core team, Ian Bridgeland, Kate Fragotta and Andrew Logan.

See you on the water!

Prognostics: Is a measure of your performance against the World Champion in your class of boat. It is expressed as a percentage so 92% means you are travelling at 92% of the speed of the World Chamion. Obviously, if you manage 100%, you probably are the World Champion!

Team,

The draw is up for the Sculler’s Head of the Barwon and can be viewed on the link below. We are in for a cool but otherwise pretty fantastic day!

Registration is at 8:30, with a briefing at 9:00. Note you will have a new bow number for this event! I had to do a little sleuthing to get everyone’s club and age but we can correct any that I got wrong tomorrow at registration.

After the briefing, we head up to Queen’s Park and we should all be above the line for a start around 10:00am. We set off in bow number order at 10 second intervals, finishing at the Judges Box on the regular racing course – the Rowing Mile.

After the race all are welcome back to CBRC for complimentary toasties and coffee and the presentation of trophies.

/////////// Race 6 and Season Winners ////////////
Congratulations to the volunteers, to our competitors, their support crew and to whoever it is who organises the weather. Another fantastic effort all round.
We finished with another fast day which saw 5 scullers go under 6 minutes with Xavier posting the best time of the series with a blistering 5:33. Callum was our fastest Tub at 7:00 flat and Rio was our fastest lady with 6:31, which was a great way for those two to stamp their authority on the event.
The other people who posted times that were fast enough were our heat winners; Ian, Tracey, Angus, Elizabeth and Bridget. A fantastic effort.
We also crowned our overall series winners, who, through attending every event and showing consistent improvement amassed the most points.
The winner of the Yurangie Cup for racing boats was Rio Smith. It was a close run with Xavier and Zander ending up just a few points behind and the competition not decided until the last race. Rio’s sustained top end of the field performance and her win last week gave her the slight advantage that won the day! A fantastic effort.
The winner of the Winter Sculling shield for Tub Boats was Callum Foley. At the beginning of the season Rob Heath was the firm favourite but in the last couple of races Callum showed his improving form and the win in race 5 lifted him to a winning position. Excellent work!
But wait! There is:
Sculler’s Head of the Barwon : Next Saturday August 9 is the over 4.5km from Queen’s Park back to our regular finish at the judges box. Entries now open in Trybooking so if you want ot be a part of that fun – please enter now. Here is the link: https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1440983
A huge thank you to our team of volunteers who stood tall to bring us a safe and enjoyable series and a special thank you to the people who really run the show: Ian, Claire Kate and Andrew.

The Weather Man is telling us there’s a 25% chance of rain so please come prepared. Following the row, we will have pizza and coffee to accompany the presentation of trophies. Woo Hoo!

//// Winter Series Race 5 ////

Another beautiful day greeted Race 5 with generally neutral conditions that were neither fast nor slow, but just right! They certainly suited the Bailey boys and Will Gilbert who all posted 5-minute times with Will leading the way at 5:40. Lilly Canfield who was visiting from Mercantile was our fastest lady at 6:22 and Quentin was our fastest Tub on 7:47. Will’s time was good enough to secure the heat win and the other prize winners were Callum, Redmond, David, Megan and Rio.

Rio’s win has put her at the top of the table for the Yurangie Cup on 51 points and Xavier, who was in a tie for first place, still holds second place but 5 points back. There are still 8 people who are within winning range so there’s no time to rest. In the Tub boats Callum has made his move and taken the lead in the competition for the Geelong Shield on 46 points. Ron and Lillia just 5 points back with Tracy and Quentin also in contention so things are close in the Tubs too! As my old coach used to say, “The first 1500m is just transport to the start of the race!”

The following Saturday August 9 is the Sculler’s Head of the Barwon over 4.5km from Queen’s Park back to our regular finish at the judges box. And the final event is the Sculler’s Head of the Yarra on Saturday August 17.

For those where too much sculling is barely enough!

///Winter Series Race 4 Review ////

Hey Winter Scullers,

Have you noticed how there are fast and slow days? With that swirling wind I found it was a head breeze half the time and following the other. The times would indicate that is exactly what happened. It was a day to perform to expectation and most people arrived within 10 seconds! We had two 5 minute men, Zander and Will who both posted a smoking 5:49. Rio was our fastest lady with 6:33 and Quentin was our fastest Tub on 7:28.

Two of our fastest folks featured in our heat winners, Zander and Quentin and the others who went fast enough were: Red, Carl and Ant. Congratulations to all our spanner winners.

We are approaching the business end of the season and the race for the Yurangie Cup sees Rio and Xavier tied at the top on 41 points. Hot on their heels are Tadhg, Zander, Henry, Carl and Ian, all within 5 points, so it’s anyone’s race at the moment. The race for the Geelong Shield for tubs is also close with Rob Heath leading on 37 points but Callum just 1 point behind and Lilia only 4 points further. Very exciting!

//// Winter Series Race 3 Draw //////

Hey Athletes

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the draw is up for Race 3 of the 2025 Winter Series. The weather looks great and although our power supplier has promised a power interruption, we will endure! With our trusty barbecue and a kettle on the gas stove, it will be tough, but I am sure we will pull through!

If you have not got a spot in the draw – don’t fret! Come on down at 8:30 and we’ll find you a place!

See you tomorrow
Peter

//// Winter Series Race 2 //////

The weather threatened to be very wintery today and I suspect that convinced some people to stay in bed. Kudos to all those who did front up to do battle, even though as it turned out, it wasn’t so bad at all. The rain stayed away, and the sun even shone through for the last heat!

Judging by the results, the conditions certainly suited our Ballarat siblings because Ebony, Paula and Lilia all had heat wins. Richard and Molly also had heat wins which is great and has boosted their points score. They will need a few more wins to catch Xavier who at 26 is our points leader for best boats while Rob Heath leads the Tubs with 21.

It was a fast day and most people saw improvements, including three 5 minute men; Zander at 5:42 Tadhg just 1 second behind him and Xavier a further 9 seconds back. Our fastest lady was Rio with a smoking 6:11 and Richard our fastest tub on 6:13.

Thanks again to our volunteers who braved the conditions and delivered a safe and successful event.

//// Winter Series Race 1 //////

Sunshine and blue skies greeted the participants of Race 1 of the Winter Series today. The temperature was near to zero but that did not cool the enthusiasm on display and some good times were recorded. Zander posted the best time at 5:56 and Oliver was just 2 seconds behind. Rio was our fastest girl with a 6:27 and Richard our fastest Tub with 6:43.

Obviously great times too from our heat winners so congratulations to Oscar Bartley, Callum Foley, Henry Coulston, Phil Ryan and Xavier Bourke. The competition has just begun of course, but that win also put Xavier on top of our points score for the Yuranagie Cup. Rob Heath stopped to check on a fellow competitor who found the reeds, and I was pleased to find that, despite this gentlemanly act, Rob leads the points score for the Winter Series Shield.
