🚨Rehab Testing Update🚨

Last week Maddi retested her stage 4 ACL rehab markers, 12 weeks after initial stage testing after clearing stage 3 📊

Not only did overall jump and hop distance improve, but the crucial limb symmetry index (LSI) also increased dramatically to be above the desired 95% across the board. LSI compares the results of the injured limb (L) to the healthy limb (R) across all tests. Along with jumps improving, single leg squat and side hop LSI has also increased to 100% (⬆️54%) and 99% (⬆️18%) respectively.

Maddi’s awesome testing results allow us to further advance her rehab programming, and in collaboration with her physio, transition closer to a return to football ⚽️

A visit to the physiotherapist is often associated with massage and other manual therapies like dry needling. Although these are useful treatment modalities in some injury situations, the first interventions in the treatment process should be the 2 E's, education and exercise prescription 🏋🏻

Education 📚 allows patients to be involved in their recovery process and help provide quality feedback to the physio, which aids in gaining an optimal rehab outcome. Along with this, education provides the patient with knowledge and techniques to self-treat their injury if it were to re-occur, and understand the underlying mechanisms if injury to further recognise any pathophysiology's and treatment methods that can be used.

Following this education component, exercise prescription is at the heart of physiotherapy treatment. This should come before any additional therapy modalities such as massage, ultrasound, dry needling, taping etc. Used in conjunction with education, exercise treatments again allow the patient to somewhat self-guide their recovery process, and provide them with the tools to manage injury in the case of re-occurrence. Therefore preventing unnecessary future appointments and costs, and allowing for quality rehabilitation and recovery to begin as early as possible 🏃🏻

🦵🏻Stages of ACL Rehab🦵🏻

In regards to ACL rehab and recovery, there are goal based stages that need to be cleared in order to progress and ultimately return to sport. Each rehab protocol will have slightly different stages, however the foundational principles remain the same.

Here at UBF we utilise a modified version of the Melbourne ACL Rehab Guide 2.0 testing protocol, with its phases being:

1 - Injury recovery & readiness for surgery
2 - Recovery from surgery
3 - Strength & neuromuscular control
4 - Running, agility & landings
5 - Return to sport
6 - Prevent re-injury

Broken Rib Recovery 🩻🤕

Recently one of our group class members Mitch fractured a couple of ribs and has only just returned to the gym 💪🏼

The initial stage of rehab involved immobilisation and avoiding any strenuous breathing. We then began light bike work, moving into posture & strength exercises. This strength work has been altered and modified to suit Mitch's current level of recovery, with the view to gradually progress and periodise a return to exercise and group class 🏋🏻

Rehabilitation Exercise Pain Scale 🤕📈

When it comes to rehab and recovery exercises, there is often going to be pain present and involved with movement. Although pain is to be expected, it is also important to pay attention and respond accordingly.

Using a pain scale or rating is a established way to find an adequate intensity/difficulty level to be working at for rehab exercises. A common example is working in pain ranges i.e.

0-4 - optimal range, but may not be working at a level that is not eliciting required stimuli
4-7 - to be expected and requires close monitoring
7-10 - too high, stop and alter exercise/movement to obtain satisfactory pain level
