One of the biggest misconceptions about self-defence is that it's all about fighting.

It isn't.

You can spend years learning how to punch, kick, grapple, or spar, but if you don't understand how violence develops in the real world, you may still be vulnerable when it matters most.

The reality is that violence rarely starts with a physical attack.

It often begins with manipulation.

Intimidation.

Boundary testing.

Verbal aggression.

A situation that simply doesn't feel right.

Most people don't find themselves in a fight because they couldn't throw a punch.

They find themselves in danger because they failed to recognise the warning signs early enough to avoid it.

At United Martial Arts & Fitness, our approach to self-defence goes far beyond physical techniques.

Students learn how to identify potential threats, understand criminal behaviour, manage distance, use verbal de-escalation, make sound decisions under pressure, and develop the confidence to act before a situation escalates.

For example:

A teenager who recognises peer pressure and removes themselves from a risky situation is using self-defence.

A woman who trusts her instincts and leaves an environment that feels unsafe is using self-defence.

A child who confidently sets boundaries and seeks help from a trusted adult is using self-defence.

An adult who identifies aggressive behaviour early and avoids confrontation altogether is using self-defence.

None of these situations required a punch, kick, or takedown.

Yet all of them prevented harm.

Physical skills remain an important part of personal protection, but they should be your last option—not your first.

The highest level of self-defence is awareness.

The ability to recognise danger before it becomes a crisis.

The ability to make good decisions under pressure.

The ability to avoid becoming a victim in the first place.

This is why self-defence training at United Martial Arts & Fitness is built around more than fighting skills. It is designed to develop awareness, judgement, confidence, resilience, and practical personal safety skills that apply in everyday life.

Because when it comes to protecting yourself and your family, the goal isn't to win a fight.

The goal is to get home safely.

Should Children Be Taught to Hit Back When a Bully Hits Them?

At United Martial Arts & Fitness, we teach children that violence is never the first answer—but neither is helplessness.

A child should never be taught to become someone's punching bag.

If a bully physically assaults a child and there is no reasonable opportunity to escape, seek help, or de-escalate the situation, that child has the right to defend themselves using reasonable force to stop the attack and create an opportunity to get to safety.

This is not about revenge. This is not about winning a fight. This is not about teaching aggression.

It is about teaching boundaries.

Children who believe they must simply endure repeated physical assaults can become targets for future bullying. Predators often seek those they perceive as unlikely to resist. A child who understands healthy boundaries sends a powerful message:

"You do not have the right to hurt me."

We teach students to:

✅ Use their voice first.
✅ Walk away when possible.
✅ Seek help from responsible adults.
✅ Attempt to de-escalate conflict.
✅ Use physical force only as a last resort.
✅ Stop immediately once the threat has ended.

This approach aligns with the principle of reasonable self-defence under Australian law. Self-defence is not about punishment; it is about protection.

There is also a reality many people avoid discussing.

A single punch can kill.

Every year, lives are changed forever because someone threw a punch and nobody intervened. Teaching children that they must always fight back recklessly is dangerous. Teaching children they must never defend themselves is equally dangerous.

The goal is not to create fighters.

The goal is to create young people who possess the confidence, judgement, and self-control to know when to walk away, when to seek help, and when they have no option but to protect themselves.

At UMF, we believe every child deserves to grow up knowing three things:

They have value.
They have boundaries.
They have the right to defend themselves when those boundaries are violently crossed.

Strength without discipline becomes aggression.

Discipline without strength can become helplessness.

True martial arts teaches both.

That is the balance we strive to develop in every student who walks through our doors.

🥋 Most people judge a martial art by how it looks. Experienced fighters judge it by whether it works under pressure.

Wing Chun Kung Fu is built on timing, precision, structure, efficiency, and intelligent movement—principles that have stood the test of time and continue to influence modern combat sports today.

Many people are surprised to learn that elite MMA athletes and UFC champions, including Anderson Silva, Tony Ferguson, and Urijah Faber, have incorporated Wing Chun training and concepts into their martial arts journey.

At United Martial Arts & Fitness, students have the opportunity to learn Traditional Wing Chun through a direct lineage:

Grandmaster William Cheung (friend and mentor to Bruce Lee) ➡️ Sifu Pablo Cardenas ➡️ Sifu Emilio Cardenas

This lineage preserves the principles, concepts, and training methods that have helped generations of martial artists develop confidence, discipline, awareness, self-defence skills, and personal growth.

⚡ Speed
⚡ Timing
⚡ Precision
⚡ Efficiency

Not flashy techniques.
Not complicated movements.
Just proven principles that continue to earn respect from martial artists around the world.

The pressure never lies.

UFC fighters don't care about styles. They care about what works. That's why Wing Chun principles continue to appear at the highest levels of combat sports.

Wing Chun Kung Fu is built on efficiency, timing, structure and pressure-tested principles. At United Martial Arts & Fitness, Sifu Pablo Cardenas and Sifu Emilio Cardenas proudly continue the teachings of Grandmaster Wong Shun Leung, one of the most respected fighters in Wing Chun history.

Many people don't realise that Wing Chun concepts have been successfully used by elite MMA athletes, including UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber, former UFC Champion Tony Ferguson, and UFC veteran Alan Belcher.

Traditional roots. Modern application. Real skills for real people.

Most people start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because they want to learn self-defence.

They stay because of who they become in the process.

BJJ teaches you how to stay calm under pressure, solve problems in real time, and overcome larger, stronger opponents through technique rather than strength.

At United Martial Arts & Fitness, our Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program is led by BJJ Black Belt Emilio Cardenas, whose coaching focuses on practical skills, safe progression, and helping everyday people achieve extraordinary results.

Whether you're 18 or 60, looking to improve fitness, learn self-defence, lose weight, build confidence, or challenge yourself mentally, BJJ offers benefits that carry over into every aspect of life.

✔ Practical self-defence
✔ Improved fitness
✔ Mental resilience
✔ Problem-solving skills
✔ Confidence under pressure
✔ Supportive training environment

No experience required.

Every black belt was once a beginner who decided to take the first step.

At United Martial Arts & Fitness, we do not want followers. We want thinkers.

One of the greatest dangers in life is blindly attaching yourself to a group, a cause, an organisation, a political party, or even a martial art without ever questioning it. The moment you stop thinking for yourself and simply repeat what others tell you, you surrender one of the most important responsibilities of adulthood: independent thought.

We see it all the time in the martial arts industry.

"MMA is the best."

"Muay Thai is king."

"Kung Fu doesn't work."

"BJJ beats everything."

The tribalism never ends.

Many people spend more time defending their style than understanding it. They become emotionally attached to a system, a gym, or an instructor and begin repeating opinions they have never personally tested. Before long, they are no longer students. They are salespeople for a particular ideology.

The irony is that many of the arts being criticised today helped shape the very systems being promoted. Modern martial arts did not appear out of thin air. Every generation has borrowed, adapted, refined, and evolved from those that came before it.

At UMF, we reject that tribal mentality.

We are not interested in proving one style is superior to another. We are interested in understanding what works, why it works, where it works, and equally importantly, where it doesn't.

Real martial artists should be students first.

A punch does not care about your style.

A takedown does not care about your gym logo.

A violent encounter does not care what uniform you wear.

Reality rewards effectiveness, adaptability, awareness, and sound judgement.

That is why UMF offers multiple disciplines under one roof. Wing Chun Kung Fu. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Muay Thai. Boxing. Street Edge Krav Maga.

Not because we are confused about what works.

Because we understand that every system has strengths, limitations, and valuable lessons to offer.

The insecure martial artist needs to tell everyone why their style is the best.

The secure martial artist is willing to learn from everyone.

Unfortunately, parts of the martial arts industry have become driven by ego. Some gyms spend more time attacking other styles than improving their own students. Others dismiss arts they have never seriously studied while happily using techniques, concepts, and training methods that originated from those very systems.

That is not confidence.

That is insecurity disguised as expertise.

At UMF, respect is not reserved for those who agree with us. Respect is earned through effort, humility, character, and a willingness to learn.

We encourage questions.

We encourage critical thinking.

We encourage respectful disagreement.

We encourage students to test ideas, challenge assumptions, and develop their own understanding rather than blindly accepting ours.

If you disagree with us, tell us why.

If you have a different perspective, share it.

Strong people are not threatened by different opinions.

Strong people grow because of them.

A martial artist should never be a zombie. A martial artist should be a free thinker—disciplined enough to listen, humble enough to learn, wise enough to question, and confident enough to stand on their own two feet.

That is the culture we strive to build at United Martial Arts & Fitness.

Not followers.

Not fanatics.

Not tribalists.

Thinkers. Learners. Leaders.
