The Gilgai Trail - Coolamon to Ganmain Cycle and Walk

The Gilgai Trail - Coolamon to Ganmain Cycle and Walk Gilgai Trail is a 16km gravel path between the towns of Coolamon and Ganmain in NSW. The trail runs parallel with the railway line over natural ground.

It also utilises existing paths and streets in urban areas of both Coolamon and Ganmain. The landscape is quite flat and passes through natural woodlands and open plains. The track is compacted roadbase gravel and therefore if you plan to ride the track we recommend a Mountain Bike or Hybrid. Horses and motorbikes are prohibited from the track. E-bikes are most welcome. From Coolamon start at the

Cowabbie St Clock and join the trail behind the Post Office. Red Arrow signage shows you the way to Ganmain, but don't worry, you really can't get lost as the trail is fenced on both sides. As you come into Ganmain cross the railway line and take the trail to the left and behind the shops. The trail ends at the Haystack Information Centre.

Track Report Summer (Jan) 2026.
Coolamon Shire Council has been busy slashing the areas overgrown with grasses and the track is clear.
There's a big branch down about 4km from Ganmain, and track volunteers are waiting for a cool day to clear it. The branch is across the track but getting around it is easy.
Remember to take plenty of drinking water with you. Also keep in mind that this time of year brings the wriggle-sticks out and although I have not seen any, I'm sure that they are there!
Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to beat the heat. We just completed a night-ride which was fun, too.
See you on the track!

Track update Summer 2025/6
Track volunteers last weekend cleared fallen branches between Ganmain and Brushwood. One heavy branch remains and is awaiting a chainsaw. Meanwhile it is possible to go around without any trouble.
Council has recently sprayed and mown the verge of the track.
As always, keep an eye out for wriggle-sticks this time of year. Morning is the best time to take the track at this time of year
Enjoy your ride!

Spring 2025 Track Report
The surrounding country is looking nice and green at the moment, with the Canola just about to break out in flower.
Some wattle species are in bloom and looking beautiful against the green of the crops!
Track has narrowed to single track in some places due to grasses growing over the path, but the track is 100% open and clear the entire length.

A great review from a new user of the Gilgai!
Thank you Lily sharing your experience.

The Gilgai Trail - what a terrific trail!
As we only have one vehicle and are building our fitness we rode from Coolamon to the Brushwood Silos and return, working towards being able to do the whole ride to Ganmain and back by autumn.
Fantastic trail, not at all what I expected, actually above and beyond.
So much fun and very scenic.
We had a swim at the gorgeous Coolamon Pool, enjoyed lunch out the back at the pub (great food, very hospitable people) and some takeaway bevvies from Foodworks for afters.
A great asset, good job!
