Leave it on the platform, one last time ✊

Our novice competitions were born out of a desire to remove the barriers to entry to the sport we love by offering a safe and inclusive environment for all lifters. Since 2014 over 2000 lifters have stepped onto our platform, many for the first time.

There are no federation affiliations, special outfits, or prior experience necessary to compete. If you can perform a squat, bench press, and deadlift with a barbell you’re ready for your first competition.

⚠️ 6 WEEKS OUT ⚠️

The final competition at Burley Strength is coming up fast!

This will be the final opportunity for lifters to post a qualifying total in the ACT and all totals will count towards the 2026 Nationals season.

Entries are available for raw & equipped lifters in both the drug-tested and untested divisions for 3-lift and bench-only.

Squats will be using a 25kg squat bar and monolift. Deadlifts will be with a Texas deadlift bar.

We’re closing up shop in 2026 with a celebration of strength.

These two competitions will be the last opportunity to experience the joy of powerlifting on the platform we’ve built over the last 10 years.

First up - ACT States on February 22nd. Entries are open to raw and equipped lifters in both drug-tested and untested divisions. Totals at this meet will be counted towards qualification for the 2026 Nationals season.

And, to finish the same way we started, one last novice competition on March 1st.

Being strong isn’t enough.

Success in powerlifting is built on the capacity to exhibit your strength when it matters most - on the platform on competition day.

You first comp should be a learning experience. An opportunity to find your feet in a new sport.

The success of that experience is dictated by your commitment to practice in the lead up.

Powerlifting is a relatively simple sport with a reasonably straight forward set of technical requirements for each lift and so it shouldn’t be a complex task to ensure your lifts are to competition standard before you take the platform for the first time.

Unless you let your ego get in the way.

The number on the bar is irrelevant if your lift would not pass in competition and understanding that idea is the thing that separates those that have a long and successful career in the sport from those who never come back after their first comp.

In the 11 years we’ve been hosting powerlifting competitions the same handful of simple errors are common for the majority of first-time competitors.

Here’s a few easy things you can focus on to ensure your first comp is an accurate representation of the strength you’ve built:
- Learn and practice lifting to the judges commands
- Ensure you’re consistently squatting to depth regardless of weight
- Get comfortable pausing every bench press rep in training
- Double check your deadlift lockouts are up to spec
- Open with something comfortable on all 3 lifts to help build your confidence

SPRING CLASSIC 2025

We had 30 lifters hit the platform on Sunday for the Spring Classic and it was an awesome day of lifting from everyone involved.

As always a huge thanks to the Burley crew for another smooth comp day. We couldn’t do it without the help of our team!

The next APL comp at Burley will be ACT States in April 2026. Date confirmation and entry announcements coming soon.
