Ever noticed that each hole on the course has a name?

Every hole is named after a person who played an important role in the Club's history. Some were founding members, some were long-serving volunteers, and others helped shape the Club into what it is today.

It's our way of recognising the people who gave their time, energy and passion to the Club over many decades.

Oliphant's Drive - 1st Hole

Named after Arthur Oliphant, Club founder. In July 1905, Oliphant and J. Herbert Eales met with the Ovals, Parks and Reserves Committee of the Fremantle Municipal Council to present their plans of forming a new club.

By August 1905, the Council approved a 15 year lease over the land and provided a loan of £500 at an interest rate of 8% to develop the first 9 holes. The repayment rate was £40 per annum for the first 5 years and £20 thereafter. Cattle were allowed to graze on the course until it became disruptive.

£500 would have the value of roughly £118,000 if spent in today's construction industry.

Sustainability doesn't have to always be a big initiative. It starts from the small day-to-day things.

We've recently partnered with Close the Loop Australia to recycle our used printer toner cartridges, ensuring they are responsibly processed and diverted from landfill.

It's a simple change that helps reduce waste and supports more sustainable operations across the Club.

Every cartridge returned is recycled through the program, helping recover valuable materials and keep them in use for longer.

The Beginning
The story of Royal Fremantle Golf Club began in May 1904, when around 20 enthusiasts gathered at His Lordship’s Larder Hotel on Phillimore Street to plan a new Club.

It was a time of growth and optimism. Western Australia was celebrating its 75th anniversary, the gold rush had brought new prosperity, and Fremantle was rapidly evolving into a thriving port city.

With ambition in the air, the next step was securing support. Arthur Oliphant and J. Herbert Eales approached the Fremantle Municipal Council in July 1905 to present their proposal and request an advance loan of £500 to help develop the course and clubhouse. While it may sound modest, that’s around $150,000 in today’s money, a serious investment in the Club’s future

The beginning of something special.

Why are some days are busier than others?
You may have noticed some days feel quiet, while others seem like everyone had the same idea.
Our busier days are usually competition days, where golfers are playing in an organised game.

There are different formats played (like Stableford, par and stroke), but in simple terms, everyone is playing their own round while competing against others. This can feel a bit different to public courses, where play is usually more casual and purely social.

Each player has a handicap, which helps keep things fair no matter their skill level. Our comp days run Tuesday to Sunday, with casual social play taking place late afternoon, following the competition field.

Fore! What it means and where did it come from?

When you hear someone yell “FORE” on a golf course, it means they’re warning you a golf ball might be heading your way! So best to stop, have a quick look around and take cover.

The word comes from Scottish origin, where the game of golf was created. It is a shortened version of “before” or “afore”, essentially meaning to look out ahead, most likely originating from military circles, where it was used to warn troops in forward positions.

Keep that in mind for next time you’re on course 🎯⚠️

Women’s Charity Day | Supporting Hannah's House
Golf days are great but golf days that give back are even better 💚

Our Women’s Charity Day is on 6 May, and this year we’re proudly supporting Hannah’s House, an organisation that provides respite care and support for families of children with life-limiting or complex medical conditions.

It’s a day that brings the community together for a meaningful cause. In previous years, we’ve raised $16,700 for Zonta House Refuge Association Inc, $14,800 for Kai-Fella, and $14,700 for Operation Sunshine WA and we’re hoping to keep that momentum going!

We’re currently seeking donations of vouchers or items for raffles and silent auctions.
If you or your local business would like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you. Feel free to send us a DM!

A proud moment for the team at RFGC ✨ Creating a supportive environment for building confidence and social connection has always been a top priority for the Club. Winning the Women and Girls in Golf Award at the WA Golf Industry Awards was the cherry on top!

Royal Fremantle is one of the largest green spaces in Fremantle, and caring for it responsibly is an important part of what we do.

Some of the ways we’re doing this include:
☀️ Solar energy helping power Club operations
🌱 Native planting across the course to support local birdlife and biodiversity
♻️ Recycling programs, including Containers for Change WA, with funds going toward supporting our junior golf development
⛳ , keeping thousands of balls out of landfill each year and repurposed to soft fall playground surfaces, stormwater pit lids, pavements and more!

By caring for the course sustainably, we’re not only looking after this green space, but also contributing to programs and initiatives that benefit the wider community.
