I was just about to start another 10 day silent retreat.

Feeling this isolation is kind of what I am used to. Though I have done this many times before, there is no doubt that to pioneer a path and step away from all that you know and all that is familiar can be daunting. With a very heavy heart, I carry the burden of announcing to all of my instructors, competitors, students, and friends on social media of the passing of my great Sensei; A*o Sensei. He was a kind man with a gentle spirit. He was a great martial artist who walked his talk and always related his training and teaching to Budo Spirit. (Martial arts spirit.)He was an absolute rock when sparring him. I remember once when I was training at his dojo north of Tokyo. We went onto the ground and as he was easily passing my guard I accidentally kicked him in the side of the head. Oh no I thought I am in for it now. He looked after me. He was stoic and when I tried to move him, I felt like an ant, trying to move a large stone. His centre of gravity was so strong, he just played with me. Sensei, thank you, I will always cherish these special times that had training together. Go forward now my friend, know that you made a difference in many peoples lives. I have used many SAW techniques in the development of Northstar Ju Jitsu and I will continue to honor your memory in those moves.

October 2019, we took NSJJ's top fighters; Aidan, Angus and Sam, and went up against the best; USA and Japan in Sports Ju Jitsu. We lost a close fight in the final against Japan.
