Restoration of the bunkers on the 1st hole at St Andrews Beach is now complete ⛳️ addressing years of erosion that had gradually caused two individual bunkers to merge into one.
The completed works have reinstated the definition of the original bunker complex and opened the sightline towards the green, making the flag visible from the tee and from much of the fairway. This outcome also reflects Tom Doak’s comments that, had he known the course would ultimately become accessible to the public, he would have designed the opening hole with greater visibility of the green.
This is the first major golf course restoration project in Australia to incorporate LOKSAND technology 🇦🇺. The innovative system stabilises the bunker surrounds and helps protect them against future erosion, allowing us to preserve the character and strategic intent of Doak’s design well into the future.
As with any newly completed course work, the restored turf and surrounding areas will continue to establish over the coming months 🌱 allowing the bunker complex to settle naturally into the landscape and further enhance the presentation of the opening hole.
