Many of our Players and Coaches have gone on to compete at elite levels representing our District as well as our State. At this time, we even have people representing the Country! Our Coaches have experience and knowledge to pass on, but above all Giants are a friendly, fun club with a family atmosphere . We proudly promote and focus on playing good softball and developing great sportsmanship. We play at Karbeethon Reserve, Angle Vale Rd, Evanston Gardens on Saturdays between October and March. We train at the same venue. Season 2021/22 will begin in October. Stay tuned for Preseason information. Players can start as young as 4yrs and continue to .... well as long as they want to in our Senior division. Juniors play in a mixed team until the age of 15yrs, the boys then go into a men’s division. Meet Robyn – Founder, Life Member and One of the Women Who Started It All

As Giants Softball Club celebrates its 40th Anniversary this season, there is no better person to help tell the story of how it all began than Robyn.

Back in 1986, Robyn and a group of senior players were playing softball for other clubs when they discovered a problem that many of us would find hard to imagine today - they didn't want juniors.

Their children, aged between six and ten, desperately wanted to play the game they had watched their Mums play. So the Mums found a solution.

They started their own club.

Initially, four teams of children played against each other for fun, without even having a club behind them. But after a year, Robyn, Debbie Robins, Helena Birrell and a small group of passionate volunteers decided it was time to make it official.

And Giants Softball Club was born.

The early days were certainly not glamorous. There were no uniforms, no equipment and no money. Robyn and Debbie and other parents spent days selling Bingo tickets at Elizabeth Shopping Centre, raising $1,000 - a small fortune for a brand-new club and enough to get Giants started.

Even the uniforms were a family affair. Robyn and her sister Lynette made them themselves, using pajama patterns to create the different sizes. And Robyn still has those original patterns today!

The name Giants came from the size of the players themselves. The kids were so small that the founders thought it would be funny to call them Giants.

They soon grew into Giants in every sense of the word.

From those humble beginnings, the club grew to have teams across almost every grade, with generations of families becoming part of the Giants story.

For Robyn, that's what has always made Giants special.
"It has always been about much more than just playing softball. For me, what makes Giants special is the family atmosphere."

Over the years, Robyn has been a coach, umpire, scorer, mentor, player, committee member and supporter, as well as a Life Member of both Giants and GDSA. She has also been recognised with SA Softball and Softball Australia Awards.

Her Giants memories span four decades - from winning the club's first premiership in 1988/89, to coaching her daughters Rebecca and Kelly, travelling to the USA with a Giants team in 1996, and reconnecting with players she coached who now have children of their own.

But perhaps one of her greatest rewards is hearing those former players talk about the positive impact Giants had on their lives.

As Giants looks towards the next 40 years, Robyn's hope is simple:
"How good would it be to know that kids are still out there, wearing the black, red and white and playing softball for Giants? That would be something very special."

And her advice to the next generation?

"Enjoy it, don't sweat the small stuff, and if at first you don't succeed, listen to your coach and keep trying!"

❀️ One Word That Describes Giants: Family

Robyn, thank you for having the vision to see a need and the determination to do something about it. Forty years ago, you and a small group of parents didn't just start a softball club - you created a place where generations of players and families could belong.

From four little teams playing for fun to 40 years of Giants history, the legacy you helped create is something to be incredibly proud of.

Here's to the next generation of little Giants - and the next 40 years.

Meet Di – Life Member, Record Holder and Giant for Life

As Giants Softball Club celebrates its 40th Anniversary this season, we're proud to recognise the people whose stories have become part of the fabric of our club.

Di first became involved with Giants in 1988 at just 15 years old. In those early days, Giants only had an Under 13 team, so she was too old to play! But with her aunt, Robyn Wheeler, one of the club's founding members, Di knew that as soon as Giants introduced senior teams, she wanted to be part of it.

And she certainly has been.

For the past 38 years, Di has been a player, umpire, coach, Vice President, committee member, club delegate and volunteer. Today, she is also a Life Member and proudly holds the record for the most games played for Giants.

From the very beginning, Giants felt like home.

"The people made it feel like one big family - everyone was welcoming, supportive and encouraging. I caught the softball bug very quickly and couldn't wait to become more involved with the club."

Over nearly four decades, there have been countless memories, but one of Di's proudest achievements came in the 2023/2024 season.

After reaching an incredible 400 games for Giants, she went on to celebrate a Division 2 premiership with the club.

It's a pretty special combination - 400 games, a premiership and the Giants games record.

But Di's Giants journey has always been about more than statistics.
"Giants is where I grew up in so many ways. It taught me the importance of being a good teammate, becoming a good leader, and learning how to win - and lose - with grace."

And while the big games and milestones are memorable, sometimes it's the simple things that stay with us. For Di, one of her favourite Giants memories is something many current members might find surprising...

πŸ’ƒ Giants discos!

"They were so much fun."

Looking ahead, Di hopes to see Giants once again become the thriving club and community it has been in the past. Her advice to the next generation is simple:

"Get involved."

Because getting involved isn't just about playing softball. It's about building lifelong friendships, learning valuable life lessons, experiencing achievement and becoming part of something bigger than yourself.

And, of course, having a lot of fun along the way.

Meet Brooke – From Junior Player to Club Leader

As Giants Softball Club celebrates its 40th Anniversary this season, we're proud to recognise the people who have grown alongside our club and are now helping shape its future.

Brooke first pulled on a Giants uniform in 1996 at just eight years old. Her mum was already playing at the club, and after spending countless nights watching training and waiting for her chance, Brooke couldn't wait to get out on the diamond herself.

Looking back, she believes the reason Giants always felt like home was simple.

"When you joined Giants, you just became an extra family member."

For Brooke, Giants has never just been about softball. It's been where she grew up.

Over the past 30 years she has experienced almost every part of club life- player, coach, umpire, committee member, Secretary, President, Junior Coordinator, Vice President, scorer and mentor. She has celebrated premierships, coached juniors, helped rebuild the club's junior program and continued to give back to the club that helped shape her.

Some of her favourite memories include being the "Bat Girl" for Robyn's A Grade team as a young child, travelling away for State Championships, celebrating three consecutive A Grade premierships and, more recently, watching a new generation of juniors discover the same love of softball that captured her all those years ago.

When asked what makes Giants special, Brooke reflected on something that has remained constant for four decades.

"We know we are just a regional grassroots club, but we've always been committed to looking to the future while instilling a love of the game and providing opportunities for the members.”

The lessons Brooke learnt through Giants extend well beyond the softball diamond.

"The person I became as a friend, a sister and a mother has been heavily influenced by the teammates, coaches and mentors I had through softball, and I would not have even met my husband or had my son without starting my journey at Giants. The club has given me so much that I will always want to give something back."

As Giants celebrates 40 years, Brooke believes the club's greatest strength has always been its willingness to adapt while staying true to its purpose.

"Whatever changes come, Giants will keep looking for ways to welcome new members, keep moving forward and grow the love of the game."

Her advice to the next generation perfectly captures what community sport is all about.

"Never underestimate the impact you can have by simply showing up. Whether you're a player, coach, volunteer or parent, you're helping create opportunities and lifelong memories for the generations that follow."
