Vale Mike (Mick) Hogan
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of two time A Grade premiership player known to Douttas as Mick Hogan. He was born in 1949, grew up in Niddrie and went to local schools and played his junior footy at Douttas.
He was a member of the 1966 Under 17 team that finished runner up to Essendon High School Ex Students. From 1967 Mike (or Mick) soon became a permanent member of the A Grade team as it re-built on the back of good junior players.
The team won the premiership in 1969, finished third in 1970, second in 1971 and were premiers again in 1972. As a member of the backline Mike was a keen competitor who never took a backward step, even flying the flag for the team in a tough encounter with Broadmeadows. His explanation was “Well he kicked me first”.
In the 1972 winning grand final Mike would have won the equivalent of the Norm Smith medal for best on ground if there had been such a medal at the time. He was given the task of playing on the captain coach of the opposing side, West Coburg. Mike did such a good job that the coach, who had significant VFL experience, had no influence on the game and Douttas ran out comfortable winners.
Mike moved to Brisbane with wife Jill, also a local, and raised a family and set up a successful business. Despite the distance they always kept in touch and attended the club’s 70 year celebration.
Mike will be remembered at Douttas as a quietly spoken gentleman who could be relied on to play his part for the team. Condolences to Jill and family.
