NORTHSTARS ARE CHAMPIONS! 🔥
It’s been 10 years since they last lifted the Goodall Cup and Newcastle Northstars are once again champions! Interestingly they last won in 2016 against Canberra Brave by a score of 2-1, and the exact same thing has repeated in 2026! 🔥

Reflection time - When I think of the Goodall Cup and what it means to win it, I always come back to this photo.

It is from 2016. 10 years ago. Newcastle Northstars have just defeated the CBR Brave 2-1 to win the championship. Fitting for what we are about to witness this afternoon as those two teams compete for the cup again.

On a personal level, myself and some friends had not long started Cheapskate Hockey and JFK was a staunch supporter of the brand from day dot. To see the emotion in his face, embracing the Goodall Cup, and wearing one of the OG trucker caps we had made, has always made this a photo that brings me joy.

We moved on from Cheapskate last year, and this Barnburner account was a way for me to keep in touch with hockey in Australia and have a little fun and creative output - it’s been a blast!

Thanks to all who have followed along, shared things, and engaged with the content. It’s much appreciated! Where to from here I’m not sure…

But for now, let’s get ready to rumble! Can’t wait to tune in for the final this afternoon. Do the Northstars get their first championship since this iconic photo was taken? Or do the Brave take their 3rd championship in the last 5 seasons?

Newcastle Northstars powered through their semifinal, while Canberra Brave won out an absolute thriller in OT! All roads lead through the Brave who have been in the last 4 finals, and have won 2. Will the minor premier Northstars hit a road block, or will it be free flowing traffic for them? 🌟⚔️

After leading 3-0 after 2 periods, Canberra Brave let the Melbourne Mustangs back in it and we got our first taste of final series OT! Bates called game 3 minutes in to extra time and we will now see Brave face off against Northstars for the Goodall Cup tomorrow afternoon! 🔥
