πŸ’¨ Are You Breathing Properly During Your Workout?

Most people focus on the weight they're lifting... but very few pay attention to how they're breathing.

And that could be costing them strength, power and even increasing their risk of injury.

When you're lifting, your breath is more than just oxygen. It helps create pressure inside your abdomen, which acts like a natural weight belt around your spine. This pressure helps stabilise your core, protect your lower back and allows you to transfer force more effectively through your body.
Research consistently shows that breathing strategy can significantly influence strength output and power production during resistance training.

For most exercises:
βœ… Breathe IN on the easier phase (lowering into a squat, lowering a dumbbell, preparing to jump)

βœ… Brace your core

βœ… Breathe OUT during the effort phase (standing up, pushing, pulling, jumping or throwing)

For explosive movements like kettlebell swings, box jumps, medicine ball slams or powerful lifts, a sharp, forceful exhale during the explosive phase can help improve power and core engagement.

When lifting very heavy loads, experienced lifters will often naturally hold their breath briefly (known as a Valsalva manoeuvre) to increase trunk stability and spinal stiffness. Research shows this can improve force production and stability, particularly when loads exceed 80% of maximum effort.
However, it also significantly increases blood pressure and isn't appropriate for everyone.

The takeaway?
Your breath isn't just keeping you alive during your workout.

It's helping stabilise your spine, engage your core, improve your lifting performance and potentially unlock strength you didn't know you had.

Next time you're training, don't just move the weight.

Control the breath. Control the movement. Control the result. πŸ’ͺπŸ”₯

Who We're Looking For
You might already be an experienced instructor.
