Emerald Pottery CLUB INC.

Emerald Pottery CLUB INC. Welcome to Emerald Pottery Club Inc; a not-for-profit, volunteer club with a mission to inspire. WHO ARE WE? WHAT DO WE DO? HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED?

The Emerald Pottery Club is formed by adult volunteeers located in Emerald and surrounding communities. We get together on Wednesday evenings to learn from eachother about pottery and make art. We work together to keep the pottery studio operating, and we promote our skills through sporadic workshops and events throughout the year. We are not a formal classroom with a regular set of classes or ins

tructors. We learn from each other and build our skills through informal mentorship. With money we receive from grants, we offer one-off workshops to the public or for kids. If you'd like to become a member, drop by the studio on the FIRST Wednesday of the month at 5:00pm to check out the space. From there, you register as an annual member and get access to the club at your leisure. The cost of an annual membership is $50. This does not include clay, glazes or firings. WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED? We are located behind the Emerald Library, past the dance studio where the Patchwork and the Photographer clubs are.

Behind the scenes of a 3 hour beginner wheel workshop is another 6 hours of volunteer time to cover, trim, bisque fire, get the pots to glaze and then fire in kiln for the second time… over 3 -4 weeks depending on the weather….learning to trim is another seperate 3 hr workshop & involves another set of skills.. and the preparation for that workshop is often a previous workshop to build on .you can’t trim a pot you haven’t pre made… so these skills require students to commit to more lessons/ workshops in a time line & of course @ more expense and commitment of more volunteer time … a huge thank you to all our volunteers.. the backbone of our club

Simon the Potter… made the trek out to Emerald Pottery Club for a couple of Beginner Wheel Workshops …. Intensive learning… learning new skills, refreshing skills, connections made, experiences had… it’s wonderful to see & hear the changes as people start by feeling overwhelmed and unsure, laughing & then by the end having some pots to take home… we had members, returning students & newbies looking for that clay experience…thank you to everyone behind the scenes who put this workshop together. Thanks to Simon who is a ceramicist in the central highlands who is willing to travel!! Without those willing to teach we can find ourselves isolated in our art practices.. not everyone can learn via YouTube or Insta reels or books ( but they do play a huge part in our pottery community out central west)

I tramped 13km looking for pottery tools in Japan ( it happened to be a Sunday & the shop was shut🙁)…. So I tramped a few more kilometres in a a town call Icheon in Sth Korea & found some tools made there .. a walnut paddles some tungsten trimming tools .. pottery is something that most cultures use… but some artisans have developed slightly different tools for their techniques…. Me I just like timber and hand made things .. some of these tools I can find similarly in Australia.. but these add to my collection of Korean hand building tools🧡

Congratulations to Jackie Gasson!!… the emerald Pottery club through the RADF & CHRC a few years ago had the privilege of Jackie being a tutor for a four day group of workshops… smaller communities are blessed with the possibilities open to us by dedicated teachers and financial assistance to help develop our local budding artists 🙏🏼 without them our region would find growth in our skills much slower …

Suncoast Clayworkers Association congratulates its president, Jackie Gasson who has received the Order of Australia (General Division) in the King's Birthday Honours List for her services to the Arts as a ceramicist.

It is well earned recognition for over 50 years of working in her chosen craft, her dedication in passing on her knowledge and skills to others and her proud advocacy for all aspects of Australian ceramic arts locally, nationally and internationally.

From all the members of Suncoast Clayworkers well done.
