'Karate in Perth - Fun, Focus, Fitness and Family'

Why all children should do Shotokan Karate
At our Shotokan Karate schools in Perth, we want to instil values derived from martial arts that go beyond self defence. Most sports can get you fit but there are many things that martial arts teaches that other sports don’t. Here are just a few of the things students can learn from our martial arts acad

emy:

Respect
All our students are taught to respect higher ranks, their older peers, their parents and the older and wiser members of our community. They are also taught not to judge anyone and to respect everyone for who they are. They learn that respect “is earned and not a right,” that real respect comes from being a good role model and an example to others. Self Control
All our students are taught to master great control, to move at high speed and at full power but not to hurt their partner or opponent. This teaches the student to respect the other person no matter who they are. Awareness of Others
All our students are taught to be very aware of other people and their surroundings. To actually think about others and not just themselves. They are taught to anticipate what others may want or not want, to pick up after themselves and to be courteous (as in the Japanese culture). To Really Focus
We all have many distractions in our lives these days. Many Perth kids are easily distracted because of the myriad of electronics in our homes. Many have difficulty focusing at school and get lower grades than they are capable of as they are easily distracted. In kids karate, there are many requirements and techniques we use help students to focus and to list much more than they normally would. To Really Listen
Many of the teaching techniques require the student to really listen. If they don’t listen they can be caught off guard, which is not what anyone wants. Students learn to listen more because they know that with the right instruction they will achieve much better results in their own training. Good Manners
Because Shotokan Karate and martial arts in general are steeped in hundreds of years of tradition from the Japanese and Chinese cultures, so are the standards and expectations of personal behaviour in our dojos. Students are expected to behave at their personal best at all times and to show good manners and behaviour to respect others. Mental Fitness
(Karate the thinking man’s/woman’s sport)
With this great martial art, you are continually trying to achieve the next belt or rank. With each new belt or comes a whole new set of challenges and skills to learn. This means you are continually learning new things and as a result your mental fitness continues improving even into old age. Many of these skills cannot be learnt over night but take many years to master. Perseverance
The skills of true Karate and martial arts students are legendary because it takes a long time to become an expert. The large majority of dedicated students see this sport as a life long processes of continually learning new things and aiming for perfection. It doesn’t just happen overnight or in a year or two, and it doesn’t just stop at black belt either. In actual fact things only begin to get really interesting after you get your black belt! Karate Shotokan is one of the most proficient martial arts you can do. It teaches you to be patient and to persevere, to over come every new challenge and not to give up. That it’s purely a matter “sticking with it” or “just keep trying” and eventually you will over come the obstacle. That giving up your dream is a choice that “you make” or a choice you choose “not to make”. Complete Fitness
It offers complete fitness. Not just your legs, or your arms but virtually every part of your body at one time or another, are utilised to get maximum results. Not to mention the wide variety of mental challenges and changes that come as a result of our diverse range of kids karate classes or kids martial arts training. Honesty and Integrity
Students are encouraged to be completely honest and trustworthy at all times as with all good cultures. To be able to train effectively and be respected in Karate you have to prove yourself (often to yourself) and to others as a roll model to younger students and as a trustworthy friend and opponent. We do not tolerate dishonesty, deceitfulness or untrustworthy behaviour in our dojos. Fun
It is one of the best forms of kids martial arts available today. In Karate we do lots of exercises and stretches that are fun and exciting that make you want to come back for more. We also do interactive exercises that develop inter-personal and social skills that are great fun too. It is fun because it is always challenging and you are always learning new things every class. Travel
Unlike other self defence classes in Perth, WSKF Australia offers the opportunity to travel overseas and train with people from many cultures all over the world. Every two years we go to Japan to compete in the WSKF World Championships and to participate in the International training seminar. Students get the opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet many new ones too. This event includes sight seeing and a lot of socialising. The trip in it self usually rates 10/10 on the fun barometer – 10/10 for outstanding training and 10/10 socially as you meet like minded people and families from all around the world. Martial Arts in Perth
Our Ellenbrook club is one of six clubs in the Perth Metro area. By training with us in Ellenbrook, you will be part of a much bigger family, with our clubs in Cannington, Doubleview, Kwinana, Padbury and Riverton all very much family orientated clubs. Shotokan Karate and Academic Success: How They Are Connected 🛡️
Shotokan Karate isn’t just about physical strength; it’s also a powerful tool for boosting your child’s academic success. Here’s how:

1️⃣ Discipline and Focus 👊
Karate helps children develop self-discipline and focus, which translates into better concentration during schoolwork and assignments.

2️⃣ Time Management 📚
Balancing Karate training requirements with school responsibilities teaches kids effective time management skills, improving their ability to juggle multiple tasks and adhere to specific requirements and time frames.

3️⃣ Building Confidence 💡
Achieving new belts in Karate builds your child’s confidence, which can lead to greater participation and self-assurance in the classroom.

4️⃣ Problem-Solving Skills 🔍
Karate fosters strategic thinking, helping children to assess situations quickly and adapt — skills that are invaluable for problem-solving in school.

🐅 What Does the Shotokan Tiger Mean?

It’s more than just a logo — it’s a powerful symbol of strength, discipline, and balance.
Created in honour of Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan Karate, the tiger reminds us that true power comes from calm focus, and our strength within.

The circle? It represents means controlled energy and the never ending Karate training journey.
Meaning there is so much to learn, it takes a lifetime and is never ending.
At Global Shotokan Karate, we don’t just wear the symbol — we live it.

👊 Respect. Strength. Self-mastery.

Remember real Karate is not easy and not a short term sport.
With respect, if you or your child don’t tend to stick with things then it may not be for you.

Putting the spin on it! 🌪️ Watch our student refining their Ushiro Mawashi Geri (spinning hook kick) during pad work. Developing power, precision, balance, and that all-important recovery takes practice. Fantastic effort and technique on display! 🥋

Who says warm-ups can't be fun?! 🏃💨 Kicking off the session with a high-energy game requiring fast thinking and moving exercises. Brilliant for getting the heart rate up, improving agility, and having a bit of a laugh before the serious training begins! Great effort from everyone.
