One of the critical items with the Specialized Brose SMag motors... this frame "size linkage" block (used on the Gen3 frames 2022-2025), is found loose with 95% of all the Levo bikes we receive for a motor service. Typically, when others are refitting a warranty replacement motor, these 2 bolts (and this link)... are not Loctited and not tightened nor torqued correctly.

What happens with any movement of this link (because the linkage block can act as a pivot), the motor starts to move and that movement exponentially increases with every subsequent movement... to a point whereby the motor has excessive movement and the motor body starts to overflex and deform under high loads (as it is not being properly secured as designed). This then can accelerate internal motor damage.

Photo shows a removed motor from a Levo frame... both bolts completely loose and the motor has started to rub and hit the frame (due to the resulting movement). Second photo shows the fully serviced motor with the frame "size linkage" refitted, tightened and torqued correctly ready for reinstallation back into the Levo.

Why do ebike motors fail? We show you... Bosch, Brose, Mahle (SL) and Yamaha motors. And we break it down and analyse the failure percentages for each motor brand - what components are most likely to fail, the most common failures and the least likely to fail.

The ebike motor manufacturers are producing better and better motors every year, and as the ebike industry grows - the motor reliability is improving. However, like any mechanical or electrical device... things do fail, components wear out and some motors require to be serviced as noise increases, play increases and the internal motor lubrication deteriorates. And of course, the motors can be damaged by crashes, by heavy pedal strikes and by heavy impacts... and yes, washing motors with high-pressure hoses will cause water ingress, with the longer term result being failed bearings .

The Bosch Gen-4 motor is an excellent motor... this issue shown can be easily fixed, and before it causes any problem or damage.

The Bosch plastic logo cover can fall off, can get knocked off. If the Bosch plastic logo cover does go missing (which does happen), the only barrier protecting the motor internals from water ingress, is a small white plastic disc sticker. To reseal and secure the plastic Bosch logo cover back, we recommend Loctite SI 5900 Silicone... this is both an excellent sealer and bonding adhesive.

The result of water ingress is shown in the photos... we have had a number of Gen4s with this issue. End result is a seized rotor/armature bearing and a very noisy and hot left side of your Gen4 motor.

The Forestal EonDrive by Bafang... also Bafang has released the M820, which looks like an identical motor. Nice little motor this one - weighs around 2kg, 400W peak power and 60Nm torque. The customer had a noisy warranty motor which had been replaced, so that motor was sent to us for servicing and repair.

The Bafang-Forestal EonDrive is a powerful little motor and known to be very quiet. This one sent to us was no longer quiet - so disassembly and investigations followed. In general, the motor was found to be in very good condition, with the investigations finally uncovering a fractured and failed needle roller bearing, found during the cleaning and servicing. Not until we removed all the grease could the state of the bearing be seen... the needle roller casing had been damaged and individual needles were loose, causing wear and noise. The motor service was completed and an upgraded needle roller bearing was fitted.

The customer feedback... "I exchanged the motors over and gave it a test run. Motor running perfectly with no added sounds. I will send the current motor soon for a service".

The Bosch Gen4 motor... in general a very good motor. Robust, reliable, smooth and quiet. But like all current ebike motors used on mountain bikes for mountain biking, water and dust ingress can be a problem. This motor could not be turned backwards in the reverse pedal direction, and reported no motor power / no motor assistance (the reverse direction turns the electric motor, turns the rotor). The motor itself was in good condition apart from the lefthand crankshaft bearing damaged due to water ingress, and the bottom rotor casing bearing which had seized (likely water had pooled around this bearing initiating corrosion, and then finally the bearing seizure). Bearings and seals were replaced, waterproofing grease applied to the bottom rotor bearing and pocket, and sprag bearings and gears all cleaned, serviced and regreased.

Servicing the Bafang M500 motor. Once again it is water and debris ingress that damages these motors... although with this one it was the left and right-side main crankshaft bearings that were found to be very noisy and rough. These bearings had failed, compromised by the water, dirt and debris that pe*****tes its way into these bearings. The motor was cleaned, inspected and checked, bearings and seals replaced where required, and a thorough clean and service of the main drive gear sprag and needle roller bearings. Then all the gears regreased with specialist metal gear grease.

All done, all good and a very smooth and very quiet motor resulted. Now reassembled and back together again for another 15,000 kms of cycling enjoyment.

The newly released Mahle 1.2 motor. Generally we have found the Mahle motor (fitted to the Specialized SL Levo, SL Kenevo and Creo), to be a very good and reliable motor. I have the Mahle 1.1 motor in my Specialized Creo... never had an issue in 3 years. However, the crankshaft sprag bearing remains a common 1.2 motor failure and now the right-hand side main crankshaft bearing appears to be prone to water, dirt and dust ingress with the 1.2 motor... which compromises the reliability and integrity of that critical bearing.

Photos from a couple of the newly released Mahle 1.2 motors we have recently serviced and repaired below. One had a collapsed crankshaft sprag bearing, whilst the other had a failed right-hand side crankshaft bearing.

The TQ HPR50 motor is an award-winning motor with harmonic pin ring transmission, fitted to the Trek Fuel EXe. But like all motors currently designed and released for eMtb use, it too has issues. Once again it is water dust dirt ingress, and as a result of our initial teardown and inspection of the TQ HPR50 motor... we found what we believe to be a simple fix.

Our diagnosis resulted in one common issue... being the righthand side crankshaft bearing being unsealed. Whilst the left side (non-drive) was found clean internally, the drive-side's unsealed bearing allowed water dust and dirt to enter and compromise the motor components. The benefit of a non-sealed bearing is that it allows pressure equalisation, however the negative is, it can and does allow water, dust and debris ingress into the motor and directly into the crankshaft clutch mechanism and harmonic pin ring transmission... from what is otherwise a very well-sealed motor unit. This appears to be the main cause of the issues found so far with the TQ HPR50 motor. Fixed with a replacement sealed bearing.

Mahle motors... otherwise known as the Specialized SL motor, is a serviceable and repairable motor - if you have all the right tools, bearings and seals, and specialist application greases. The Mahle motor appear to be a very good motor with the main issues being with the torque sensor sprag bearing, which needs regular servicing. Crankshaft bearings can also degrade (and fail) as well, with water ingress... although water ingress doesn't seem to be a common issue with the Mahle motors.

Water ingress in the current eBike motors remains the single biggest issue for the life of these motors. The water (and dust) pe*****te into bearings and electrical components, and can cause serious issues. All fixable - but be careful when washing, particularly around the right-hand crankshaft. The photos are from Brose, Bosch and Shimano motors. We have found similar with Yamaha motors as well.

For the Brose and Bosch Gen-2, we can upgrade those motors with additional seals and protection to prevent future water ingress and future water corrosion damage.

Busy week with motor repairs and Rohloff eBike conversions… 2 Brose motors, 2 Yamaha motors a Bosch Gen-2 and a Panasonic which were all serviced, repaired and 3 were upgraded with improvements over the standard motor.

The Brose motors were upgraded with stronger heavier duty sprag bearings, additional seals to prevent future water ingress and the latest stronger Brose belts. The Bosch Gen-2 motor we installed a Mudstop which prevents water dirt and debris from entering the crankshaft and we add an additional lip seal to again minimise any chance of water ingress.
