Lesson 1 and we go from understanding Coordination to pole pushing and applying speed in the same session , wow day !
Walking fast, exercising hard, getting heart rate up are all physical elements that are very hard to achieve when you live with very low or no vision. Elysia can see the direction of light only in this video so we are able to use the sun as a direction land mark, in addition to me deliberately scratching shoes, and verbal direction.
Fast walking is something people that are blind do not get to experience often , especially when they are in control. Here we are able to start developing functional arm swing along with functional posture to turn butt, abs, shoulders, and neck on … all the bits that are often neglected with blind mobility skills as ine often is looking at the ground or has very static shoulder and body positions from holding a cane or dog guide .
So great to get the application of speed along with technique in lesson one. This will niw transition to a running track or field so we can develop endurance and stamina .
The great thing about learning Nordic Walking skills for Elysia is the muscle memory of good posture and correct mobility . The skills learnt here directly correlate to primary day to day human movements plus all primary mobility using her long white cane in the community. In summary we are teaching Elysia how to use her body more efficiently and to reduce future risks of pain or injury.
Bring on lesson two !!
