Vale Peter Davidson 💙

Sadly, after a tenacious six-year fight with cancer, Peter passed away this morning with family by his side.

A talented midfielder, Peter began his career at Claremont before getting an opportunity at the Brisbane Bears & West Coast Eagles, playing a handful of VFL/AFL games. In 1992, he played his one & only season at East Fremantle along side brother Jeff and was a member of the 1992 Premiership Team.

Condolences to the Davidson family & friends.

Jeff Cassidy was an abundantly talented utility whose career was cruelly undermined by injury. Geelong recruited him from Cobram and he made his senior VFL debut midway through the 1974 season, impressing onlookers straight away with his crisp ball handling and superb disposal skills. Unfortunately, he soon became beset by leg injuries which limited him to just 50 league appearances in six seasons, interspersed with a one season stint at East Fremantle in 1977.

In 1981, Cassidy returned to Old Easts to finish his career; he retired at the end of the 1984 season after 70 WAFL games and 163 goals, and having twice topped the club's leading goal kicker list. However, overall his effectiveness and impact had been seriously undermined by persistent injury woes. In 1985, Cassidy was lured to Lavington Football Club where he coached for four seasons. Throughout is tenure, the club played in four consecutive grand finals and won the flag in 1986.

Ron Alexander coached West Australia which boasted some big names such as Mark Bairstow, Peter Wilson, Gary Buckenara, Nicky Winmar, Paul Harding and Derek Kickett back from Victoria; in addition to 12 West Coast Eagles. The only WAFL player to earn selection was South Fremantle's Peter Matera.

Chris Mainwaring, Wilson, Bairstow, Chris Waterman and Winmar were WA's outstanding performers but it was a mis-match as Victoria made true their pledge to regain national champion status.

The powerful Vic's, led by Jason Dunstall kicking nine goals was awarded the Simpson Medal in a dominant display defeating West Australia - 19.12 (126) to 10.12 (72).
