Mersey Yacht Club

Mersey Yacht Club Yacht Club Johnson in 1970. His investigations revealed that the first regatta held at Sayer's Point, where the original Club House stood, was in 1877.

Although authentic records covering the early period are hard to come by, extensive research into yachting on the Mersey was done by the late Mr George D. It was not certain whether a club-house was actually built at that time, but it is certain regattas and other yachting events were held then. A Yacht or Aquatic Club was inaugurated in September, 1893. Mr William Buck was elected to the chair of

foundation Commodore in that year. The inaugural meeting of the Mersey Yacht Club, as we know it today, was held at Curwen's Salon in Rooke Street, Devonport on 12th November 1923

Clean Bum Day
What a difference it makes. Adam on Vision won the start by a nose after consciously timing his run, and 'confessed' later he may have done a little "cleaning along the waterline". He finished a credible fourth.
From about 2 seconds after the start gun, it was Woteva's day; Reg and the crew, (including another 'new' Adam trying sailing), had the big boat powered up at the start to roll through below Vision and were never headed. They took line, and handicap honours after lapping the tail enders. A mid-week dash to PDYC for a slip and bottom scrub paid big dividends eh?
Peter and the well-fed (Leanne Newman spoils them) crew on the catamaran Plan Four were last across, but worked up through the fleet for second. Scuttlebutt tells me there are several wives of keelboat sailors keen for a sail on Plan Four...just saying fellas...you'd better factor a family 'cat' into the budget.
Teresa and Anton's trailer-sailer 'Sand Castle' always has a clean bum from storage ashore, and they get the most out of her - third today. They were the only boat to fly a spinnaker, but did get it 'wet' during the drop at the end of the leg.
On the pink boat, Johnny had to do a crew exchange onto the committee boat (Tapiti again) for Macca's daughter Payton, who succumbed to mal-de-mer from the short sharp sea kicked up after several days of NE wind. The homely cabin of the power cat soon had her smiling again, and by the time the race finished she was the one on the foredeck sounding the ho**er for each finishing yacht.
Gwyn was again manning the bar post-race, which was fortunate, as Jamieson and Terry were still on the committee boat, and Jamieson had to manually pull four anchors to retrieve the buoys, as 'one-lung' Terry was not much help. :-)
The post-race chat was well underway when a weary Vice Commodore finally made it ashore.
Thanks everyone for a great (albeit grey) day out on the course.
Due to the upcoming long weekend the next race in the series will be June 20th. Newcomers welcome.
I'm sure some will go for a sail on non-race days, so look out for activity at the clubhouse.

Something Missing???
Work has started on removal of the main marina in segments, thanks to engineer Phil Marshall and his family (plus ring-in Terry).
There was so much corrosion, the segments had rusted around the pins and were no longer articulating.
Once freed up with a hydraulic ram, the sections were separated one by one to come out on the slip. The first segment was wobbly but floated upright; the second one capsized immediately after it was freed as a result of the free surface effect of water in the floats.
Using the RIB, and Jamieson having a nippy dip in the river, the second section was eventually slipped - albeit upside down. They are seriously corroded.
Thanks Phil, Angela, Jamieson, Sam (and Terry) for the work preparing and removing them. It was a big effort.
P.S. This Marshall family were given an award last year for decades of service to the Club - and they're still at it!!! The Club is fortunate to be able to access their skills.

View from Above
Here are the photos taken from the bridge-deck of the committee boat 'Tapiti' during last Saturday's glorious sailing day on the waters off the Bluff.
Taken by our Vice Commodore, Jamieson Marshall, (when he wasn't busy running the race)

Perfect Autumn Day – Race 1
Sunny, not too cold a breeze - 15 knots from the southwest for efficient sailing, and swell, but not uncomfortable. Terrific day for a fun sail.
The triangle course was set off the Bluff, where a lot of people had gathered for the food vans and could appreciate the spectacle that the line of competing yachts made.
Tapiti proved so functional as a committee boat. The turning marks were easily dropped off the transoms. She ripped around the course at 18 knots in comfort for the crew, acting as a stable camera platform from both the deck and flybridge. While the race officials couldn’t sail themselves, they enjoyed being right in the thick of the action. (Yes, we saw the spinnaker wineglass, Teresa and Anton 🙂, and the pink boat's attempt at a bribe, Luke 😜).
Eight club yachts participated. Woteva and Calypso had a great tussle all day after a close start, leading across the line. Plan Four and Ragin were well behind at the start, but these multihulls wound up as the race progressed, with the 31’ tri ‘Ragin’ taking line honours. Ken rescued her from the seagulls a few years back – and look at her go now. Tim had new member, Jonnie Mac, crewing for his first sail on the Masrm.
The fleet mostly settled into two groups, with yachts sailing in close proximity to each other adding to their enjoyment – and their competition. Later in the afternoon the wind shifted to the west, reducing the windward component, enabling all boats to enjoy three or four laps. Hats off to Adam and Wyatt Williams regularly gaining experience on Vision - is a bigger boat on the radar??? 🤔
The race was well-timed to enable a clear exit from the river for the commercial trader ‘John Duigan’ bound for King Island, then it was all back to the club for the post race stories. (Results are in the pictures.)
Thanks to Terry and Jamieson on Tapiti for setting a great course, and putting in the hard yards hauling marks and anchors over the fore-beam at the end of the day.
As usual, Wayne sneaked out of the river on his huon pine launch ‘45’ for a sausage BBQ, stern anchored off the surf club beach.
Next race - May 23rd. All welcome.
