The IKO Group Australia headed by Shihan Theodore Tsanidis 8th Dan was formed in 1972 as an organisation teaching Goju-Ryu Karate to both males and females of all ages. Since inception, the IKO Group Australia has been affiliated with the IKO Group Japan and has taught hundreds of students traditional and authentic Budo (Japanese martial arts) as passed down through the centuries. Here at the IKO, we believe in perfecting the elements of the mind, body and spirit through a myriad of exercises and basic movements that are gradually fused into the psyche enabling spontaneous reactions. The undertaking of Kata (patterns) and Kumite (free sparing) is often used to measure the extent of an individuals development. We believe that our holistic approach that places emphasis on the development of the mind, body and spirit will provide a balanced and healthy life. Through the rigorous physical techniques practiced here at the IKO, karate will provide an excellent all-round exercise that stimulates just about every muscle in the body as well as a means of self defence from a would-be attacker. Committed to traditional teachings, our style of karate (goju-ryu) also emphasizes and teaches respect, courtesy and humility. The IKO Group Australia has six assistant instructors that participate in the development of each and every student. Our assistant instructors move between our dojos to help promote and cultivate this ancient military art. The IKO Group Australia provides a comfortable and courteous environment that is sensitive to an individual’s needs and rate of progress.

🥋 Move with purpose. Spar with control. 🇦🇺

At IKO GOJU RYU Karate-Do Australia, our sparring practice emphasises movement, light contact and control—not simply landing a technique.

The focus is on using footwork to maintain balance, manage distance and create opportunities, while keeping each exchange controlled and respectful. Staying composed, recognising openings and knowing when to move are just as important as the technique itself.

🤝 Your training partner is there to learn with you. Light contact allows us to practise together with care, placing precision and awareness ahead of force.

Every exchange is an opportunity to improve—not a contest to win. Train together, learn together and help each other grow. 🥋

🥋 Monthly Black Belt Training – Kata Focus 🥋

Another strong monthly Black Belt training session at IKO Goju Ryu Karate-Do Australia 🇦🇺

This class was dedicated to kata practice, refining every important detail—from correct stances, posture and balance to breathing, timing, focus and controlled power.

Kata is much more than a sequence of movements. It preserves the techniques, discipline, traditions and fighting principles of Goju Ryu Karate-Do. Through continuous repetition and careful correction, we strengthen both our technique and our martial spirit.

Well done to everyone for the concentration, commitment and respect shown throughout the session.

Train with purpose. Improve through repetition. Preserve the tradition.

🎵 Background soundtrack: Soft traditional Japanese instrumental music featuring shakuhachi flute and koto, with no vocals.

🥋 BLACK BELT TRAINING – STRONG BASICS, DEEPER UNDERSTANDING 🥋

Another focused and rewarding black belt training session at IKO Goju Ryu Karate-Do Australia, concentrating on the foundations of traditional karate: Kihon, Kata and Bunkai.

Under the guidance of our Head Instructor Kon Shihan, together with John Shihan, Neil Shihan and Gary Sensei, the class worked in detail on basic techniques, strong stances, correct posture, balance, timing, breathing, power and precision.

The training continued with detailed Kata practice, followed by Bunkai, exploring the meaning and practical application behind each movement. Understanding how every block, strike and stance can be applied is an important part of developing complete and effective karate.

We were also very proud to see our junior black belts, Jana and Saada, training with excellent concentration, discipline and commitment alongside their senior instructors.

A black belt does not mean the basics are finished—it means we return to them with greater knowledge and a deeper understanding.

Strong Kihon builds strong Kata. Strong Kata develops effective Bunkai. 👊🥋

🥋 OSU! A HISTORIC MILESTONE 🥋
Please join us in honouring Hanshi Theodore Tsanidis on his promotion to 10th Dan, awarded at Hombu Dojo in Tokyo, Japan.

Over 50 years of unbroken dedication to traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu karate — five decades of discipline, sacrifice, and the relentless pursuit of mastery. From white belt to the highest rank a karateka can achieve, Hanshi's journey embodies everything our art stands for: respect, perseverance, and the true spirit of Budo.

This achievement doesn't just honour one man — it honours the entire lineage from Chojun Miyagi to Gonnohyoue Yamamoto carried forward through generations of dedicated instructors, all the way to our dojo floors here in Sydney.

Congratulations, Hanshi. Your example inspires every one of us training under the IKO Goju Ryu banner to keep striving, keep learning, and keep honouring the traditions passed down to us.

🙏 OSU! 🙏

🥋 Balance in Karate-Do 🥋
At our IKO Goju Ryu Karate-Do Dojo, we focused on one of the most important foundations of karate: balance.
With Neil Shihan guiding the class, students worked on developing balance not only in their stances and movement, but also in their focus, control, and spirit.
In Goju Ryu, balance is more than staying steady on your feet. It is about finding harmony between strength and softness, speed and control, body and mind.
A great session with strong effort from everyone on the floor. Well done, karateka! 👊
Train hard. Stay focused. Keep balanced.
